i could burst into tears listening to this. not exactly in a sad way, your heart just kinda overflows around 02:55. loved it. (hope this makes sense)

maia wilkes Nothing sad about this, that's right. :). It is just sublime.

Exactly what I feel : emotional overflow. Do you know Thr Protecting Veil of John Tavener? I feel the same kind of overflow while listening to it.

It does. Well said.

This is my favorite performance on the internet of this wonderful piece of music. I especially like the piano, which is really well done, not just underlining the gorgeous cello part, but giving it a somewhat late accent. Beautiful. Well done!

Just imagine hearing this amazing music while sitting as a freezing prisoner in a Nazi Stalag prisoner of war camp. That's where he composed it and it was performed by fellow prisoner musicians. So powerful. Epic.

J'ai eu la chance d'assister à une représentation de l'œuvre de Messiaen et ce passage était l'un des plus magiques, les nuances du violoncelle sont sublimes

I find this interpretation absolutely stunning, exactly the proportions I would wait. The Warped Time ensemble shows an outstanding maturity. This is exactly the Joy, the contained Joy of the After The World, the inner Joy, the Joy of contemplation. Olivier Messiaen was a PoW in Germany, forbidden to write music, when he composed this in 1940-5. He found the peace of mind amidst the chaos. Maybe is it hard to enjoy. Thank you, LukasHuisman for this marvelous cycle of musical videos.

Cyrille Clément I agree! Loved your comment

I was lucky enough to see this entire work performed live on the 15th anniversary of September 11th (at Constellation Chicago) and came here seeking other versions. I am very happy to discover the Warped Time Ensemble. This movement is the one that really melts my heart with its delicacy and sadness. 75 years after its strange premiere, I suspect it will remain a classic long after we're gone. Thank you for keeping music like this in our ears!
