I've loved this song since I first heard it sung on Maui back in mid 70's - my cassette "like a seabird in the wind" by Olamana broke so many years ago .. I was named after the racing canoe "Malia"

Yes, this is a beautiful song. I used to wonder if Barack Obama named his daughter after this song (which he would have heard growing up), but I heard she got her name from someone else. I think itʻs just the Hawaiian version of "Mary" or "Maria" and Jerry Santos chose it to represent all Hawaiian girls (or young people) in his song to support and encourage their sense of self-worth and pride in their connection to the ʻāina (land) and kūpuna (ancestors) that were being lost in times of development and Americanization.

...as you can see my name is spelled different here for reasons .. My last name was is well known on Oahu's north shore. Named after my father who was a well known surfboard shaper.
