Guilty
One Way System Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Long time ago -- remember our deal? Not just friends but family
Bare-face lies both sides of the fence, all you have to do is believe in me
To front the sounds in the public eye was your sense of the security
Now you're gone we justify yor lie, ain't that the way it's meant to be?

Guilty you said we're guilty. We ain't the guilty, you are the guilty.
Guilty. You were the guilty, get the right story before you accuse me.
Guilty you said we're guilty. We ain't the guilty, you are the guilty.
Guilty. You were the guilty, get the right story before you accuse me.

Your visionary guides the path we took, to the places that were right for you
Ties have to be broke, and bullshit dried up. Work it out, that will never do
Crawls back again to agree in vain, out trust and friendship took the strain
To all the people who you think they know -- we ain't about to lie down

Guilty you said we're guilty. We ain't the guilty, you are the guilty.
Guilty. You were the guilty, get the right story before you accuse me.
Guilty you said we're guilty. We ain't the guilty, you are the guilty.
Guilty. You were the guilty, get the right story before you accuse me.

Here today, we'll be here tomorrow -- yes that's something you can count on
Keep on answering to the lack of truth, that is always thrown back by you
Ain't gonna stop us- we have our plan -- our way or no fucking way
With all that said, just this to say -- who's guilty, us, you or they?

Guilty you said we're guilty. We ain't the guilty, you are the guilty.
Guilty. You were the guilty, get the right story before you accuse me.

Guilty you said we're guilty. We ain't the guilty, you are the guilty.
Guilty. You were the guilty, get the right story before you accuse me.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to One Way System's song "Guilty" revolve around the theme of betrayal and the consequences that arise when someone breaks a trust that was once established. The song starts with the singer reminding the betrayer of the deal they made and how they were more than just friends but family. However, lies surfaced on both ends, and now the singer is trying to justify their lies to others. The chorus "Guilty you said we're guilty, we ain't the guilty, you are the guilty" paints a picture of the singer deflecting the blame and pointing fingers at the betrayer.

The second verse alludes to how the betrayer guided their path and took them to the places that were fitting for them. But, the singer feels that ties had to be broken and lies exposed. The singer asserts that they won't stop despite the betrayal, and they have their plan, "our way or no fucking way." The last line in the song, "who's guilty, us, you or they?" is a rhetorical question that leaves a lasting impression on the audience.

Overall, "Guilty" is a reminder that trust is a two-way street, and breaking it can lead to dire consequences. The song highlights the emotions of betrayal and the hurt that comes with it.

There's a lot covered in this brief video and I hope they do more like this. Here's what I saw but correct me if I got anything wrong

0:20 Electricity / technology is shut down as the primary energy source of the world
0:25 Magic & magic technology replaces former technology in every form
0:28 Frederik (Sol Badguy before he went Badguy) is experimenting with colleagues to advance magic technology
0:37 Frederik & Co cause an accident that kicks off the Gear Project (magic weaponized artificial humanoids) and "kills" Aria, Frederik's love
0:45 Aria is gone & Frederik now constantly fights the new inner beast of his, becoming Sol Badguy
0:50 Attempting to bring back Aria through experimentation creates an enemy of humanity, Justice and also creates the first "intentional" gear (Sol Badguy was created accidentally)
0:53 The crusades begin with the gears going to war with humanity. Sol's rival Ky is introduced as a ruthless swordsman that cuts down swathes of gears
0:57 The Valentines are introduced with their goal of eliminating humanity
1:24 Sol fights for humanity despite being a gear himself, pushing himself to become stronger whilst keeping his inner beast at bay
1:35 Sol gets really pissed thinking about all the individuals that were manipulated / brainwashed by the "Mother" of the Valentines (Ariels / "Mother"). Many of these now allies were bitter enemies while brainwashed under the control of "Mother" (Sol happens to be immune to Mother's Influence over Gears)
1:57 The "Mother" Valentine is defeated with an unlikely coalition of the strongest people in Guilty Gear + Sol's transformation is shown (His strongest form but also his most gear-like)
2:03 Sol and "That Man" have a staredown after the defeat of "Mother". Formerly colleagues, then enemies, then allied again to defeat "Mother", they have a complex relationship to say the least.
2:06 Sol continues to travel the world while grappling with his loathing of being a gear himself, despite the fact that Gears will forever be a part of his life, both inside himself and his friends/family that are also Gears

There are a few things that are off here with this synopsis, unfortunately, but it's also very hard to blame someone for missing a few details in a story like Guilty Gear's.
0:37 Frederick was not turned into a Gear by accident: Asuka (That Man) did so on purpose to convince Aria to agree to go into cryosleep until a cure for her condition could be found. Aria wouldn't do it if it meant there was any chance she'd wake up after Frederick already died, so Asuka figured that the best way to convince her was to just make him freaking immortal. Aria's terminal illness had nothing to do with Frederick or Asuka's actions. The "accident" that shut down the Gear Project at this time was the US military attempting to seize control of the team's materials, and killing many of its personnel in the process. The commotion at the time led to Frederick being reported as dead, but he was actually just sealed away for 14 years before he managed to break out and escape.

0:50 Justice was not an "attempt" to bring back Aria, she was Aria in both mind and body, albeit turned into the most powerful Gear ever because Justice was supposed to be a military superweapon. Asuka made sure that the person who became Justice was Aria both so he'd know that she'd actually survive with her mind intact, and because he needed whoever became Justice to be willing to work with him to prevent Gears from being used for war.
The reason why Justice became a genocidal maniac was because when Justice was first being tested, the Universal Will (aka the Valentines' "Mother") attempted to manifest itself by taking over Aria's mind: while Aria was able to fight off this possession, the Universal Will had copied Justice's DNA during its possession attempt and then moved over to Japan to try to use this DNA alongside the local population to create itself a new body. To prevent this from occurring, Justice needed to immediately respond by firing a full powered Gamma Ray to entirely annihilate the country of Japan, but Aria was still unresponsive from struggling with the Universal Will, so they needed to do a manual override on her body to force her to fire the attack. The experience of having her mind invaded and then immediately afterwards destroying an entire country filled with millions of people was too much for Aria to bear, and so she completely snapped and went insane. Her soul itself was said to be shattered.
Justice wasn't actually the first Gear, but she was the first one (besides Sol) to actually have free will and maintain her intelligence.

0:53 Ky was always a just and honorable soul--it is true that he was an absolute Gear butcher, but as long as Justice was alive and wanted humanity gone, every Gear was nothing more than a mindless killing machine enslaved to her bidding. When it came to everything else, Ky's status as a paragon was well known. It's why Sol was so disappointed when Ky first challenged him to a duel--Ky thought he was sparring with a fellow knight of the Order and fought fair, instead of striking Sol down like he was just another Gear. Ky quickly begins to question his own perspective when he actually gets to engage in conversation with Justice at the end of his story in the first game. And, I mean, as soon as Guilty Gear X he's going well out of his way to cover for and help Dizzy, despite her obviously being a Gear. Really, Ky being a ruthless killing machine was more something that was informed to us in the Xrd Rev Extra Story, and not what his character was introduced as.

1:35 Sol was actually just flashing back to all the "bosses" of the previous Guilty Gear games. Justice, Dizzy, I-No, and the first Valentine, respectively. The only one of those four who was actually controlled by the Universal Will was Valentine. I don't think Sol was ever told about the Universal Will's part in Justice's madness, and Dizzy and I-No just straight up had absolutely nothing to do with it. Dizzy wasn't even doing anything malicious, the whole plot of Guilty Gear X was that she was thought to be incredibly dangerous because she was an independent, intelligent Gear who had "defeated" Ky Kiske in battle (he deliberately let her get away) and seemingly had some sort of connection to Justice.

Also, Ariels couldn't control Gears at all, or even her own daughter Ramlethal. (The only person she seems to actually be able to control is Elphelt.) Her whole plan was to bind Elphelt's soul to Justice's dead body and use her to control all Gears (including the Opus units she and the Conclave conspired to place all around the world) to wipe out humanity.
