Famine
Opeth Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I can't see your face
And I can't breathe your air
So I wonder why I get cold inside
When I hear your name

When we meet eye to eye
I will ask how and why
And when guilt has its way
One lesser reason to stay
And I will see her cry

Into the fire of our youth comes the devil again
And you feel your way, feel your way

Saw you standing nigh
In the corner
Told me that you had died
And I would die when my heart was empty

Become a ghost in perpetual void
And neglect all reasons why

Overall Meaning

The opening lines of Opeth's song "Famine" depict an emotional distance between two individuals, with the singer unable to see or breathe the air of the person they have emotional ties to, leaving them cold inside even at the mere mention of their name. The first verse explores the interplay of guilt and blame in a failing relationship, with the singer expressing a desire to confront their partner face to face, knowing they will have to confront their shortcomings, and admitting that their leaving will likely cause the person pain.

The second verse draws on the themes of mortality and loss, with the singer recounting a supposed encounter with someone who has died and expressing a sense of futility in the face of their own mortality. The final line, "And neglect all reasons why", seems to suggest that the singer feels overwhelmed or helpless in the face of their emotional turmoil, unable to reconcile their feelings with the realities of the situation.

i like old opeth, and i like this.  i've never understood why people can't just like both.  this is a good retro-inspired psychedelic prog rock album.

@Denvercoder

Simulated Rain I deff get more into this the older I get. 🤷🏼‍♂️

@yardenportal6942

feels like king crimson

@Denvercoder

So if you liked Eminem and all of a sudden he came out with a country album you be like, “YES! Let’s go. This is dope!!!”?

@simulatedrainn

@@Denvercoder yeah if it was good, the fuck?

@yellowkangdexasthur4904

@@Denvercoder Eminem has no country influence. 70s prog has always influenced Opeth and they were going to go all in and do something in this direction eventually. It's great for what it is and the albums from here have only gotten better. Dark progressive rock is my favorite genre of any music so I am biased but they do it justice. Bands need to evolve

Heritage is how I discovered Opeth. Today I own all of their records and love their older stuff, but to me this album is just something else.... Something special, a spellbind.

@sidneystokes6882

Heritage was my first Opeth album as well. No regrets. Still haven't listened to Blackwater Park yet though...
