1) The Opposition were a long running post-punk band from London, England that featured Ralph Hall, Marcus Bell and Mark Long, and mixed new wave sounds with reggae rhythms.
Founded in 1979, The Opposition released their first single on the independent record label Double Vision records. This was called "Very Little Glory" which the NME (New Musical Express) reviewed and said that it was "a song recorded before its time".
With the press picking up on the band, they switched from indie to major and secured a contract with the Ariola Record label in Europe. A single called "This Year" came out by Ariola, followed by the self produced "Breaking The Silence" album, and a French tour.
In 1984 the band signs to Virgin Records offshoot Charisma Records and released firstly "Intimacy" in 1983. The "Promises" album was released a year later, and another album called "Empire Days" the following year. On these releases the band worked with Producer Kenny Jones.
After a hiatus, when band members Marcus Bell and Mark Long recorded a more commercial sounding album under the name SO, the band regrouped and released the album "Blue Alice Blue" album, again recorded with Producer Kenny Jones. Also, a number of re-issues get the deluxe treatment with extra tracks on Virgin Records.
Although working separately (Mark in London and Marcus in France) they released two albums together: "War Begins At Home" in 1993 and "Blinder" in 2003.
Then Marcus and Mark parted their ways. Marcus Bell released new album "Love and Betrayal" in 2011 under the name The Opposition, equally Mark Long released few Albums under same band's name containing some unreleased material, demos and live tracks.
Marcus Bell died from cancer in December 2014.
Mark Long continued touring under The Opposition name and released further albums: "Somewhere In Between" in 2016 and "Hope" in 2021
Mark Long died from cancer n September 2022

SMALL TALK
Opposition Lyrics

I did not recognise your face
You smiled at me last night
I don't know how much more I can take
I'm sick of all this small talk
Going round in circles, it's driving me insane
Sick of all this small talk
Hours and hours and nothing's changed
You screamed at me last night
But you just ignored my cries
You smiled at me last night
Well, I don't know how much more I can take
I'm sick of all this small talk
Being ignored, well it's driving me insane
Sick of all this small talk
Hours and hours and I'm still to blame
Well I'll tell you I've never felt so much.
We talked at each other last night
We might as well have saved our breath
You aimed some words at me last night
It's a shame your ears don't work as well as your mouth
Well I'm sick of all this small talk
Going round in circles, it's driving me insane
Sick of all this small talk
Hours and hours and nothing's changed
Well I'll tell you, I've never felt so much pain
The song Small Talk by Opposition is a powerful expression of frustration and pain caused by meaningless conversations and lack of communication. The singer uses his experience to convey the theme of the track, describing how he feels after a lengthy period of tiring small talk with his loved one. Interestingly, the song’s lyrics give different shades of meaning to the segment “You smiled at me last night, I don't know how much more I can take.”
In the first verse, the singer suggests that he's exhausted about going round in circles while indulging in small talk. The line “I don't know how much more I can take” suggests exasperation and exhaustion from the meaningless conversations that aren't leading anywhere. It's a situation anyone can relate to, where one feels perpetually trapped in a loop of meaningless conversations, which then leads to boredom, dissatisfaction, even anger.
In the second verse, the lyrics suggest an argument or a disagreement, where the other party is speaking, but the singer's cries are being ignored. The line “I'm sick of all this small talk" seems to suggest that the singer desires a more meaningful connection, something that goes beyond the surface level conversation. By repeating the line “Well, I shouldn't take this” throughout the three verses, the singer does the right thing by asserting his dignity and standing up for himself.
