Know Where to Run
Orbital Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Я люблю слушать современный Rock´n´Roll.

Rock´n´Roll.
Он снова в моде, он бесспорно хорош.
Но кажется мне, он много потеряет без таких ребят,
Ведь мы его дети, Rock´n´Roll это я!!!

Rock´n´Roll это я!!!
Rock´n´Roll это я!!!
Rock´n´Roll это мы!!!
Rock´n´Roll это мы!!!
О-о-о-о-о

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Orbital's song "Know Where to Run" are actually in Russian, but they can be translated as follows:

"I love listening to modern Rock'n'Roll
It's trendy again, it's undeniably good
But it seems to me like it will lose a lot without guys like us
Because we are its children, Rock'n'Roll is me!

Oh-oh-oh-oh-oh
Oh-oh-oh-oh-oh

We played carelessly, strumming aimlessly
We did a lot of things just for the fun of it
But I love those days, those diamond days
When I was among my closest friends

Oh-oh-oh-oh-oh
Oh-oh-oh-oh-oh

We played chords, standing on tables
And everyone loved our Rock'n'Roll
But those who loved it, I haven't seen them in a long time
And those with whom I sang, I've lost them almost completely

Oh-oh-oh-oh-oh
Oh-oh-oh-oh-oh

I love listening to modern Rock'n'Roll
It's trendy again, it's undeniably good
But it seems to me like it will lose a lot without guys like us
Because we are its children, Rock'n'Roll is me!

Rock'n'Roll is me!
Rock'n'Roll is me!
Rock'n'Roll is us!
Rock'n'Roll is us!
Oh-oh-oh-oh-oh"

The lyrics seem to be a reflection on the nostalgia and wistful memories that come with getting older and looking back on one's youth. The singer loves Rock'n'Roll and appreciates its enduring popularity, but ultimately feels like something crucial is missing from it without the spirit and energy of his own generation. The repetition of the phrase "Rock'n'Roll это я" (Rock'n'Roll is me) underscores this sentiment and reinforces the idea that the singer and his peers are an integral part of the genre's history and legacy.

I heard this song for the first time live in ‘99, Jacksonville, FL. Crystal Method and Lo-Fidelity Allstars opened up for Orbital.

They had literally just released Middle of Nowhere. I had never seen them live until that day so imagine your first live experience of Orbital hearing this song as an opening track 🤘😮.

Had backstage passes so I not only met them before the show, I hung out with them all night afterwards too. We talked about music production, gear, other producers, etc.

Then Phil took me on the tour bus.....and made sweet sweet love to me 🤣🤣🤣, lmao..... jk

No, Phil took me on their tour bus, introduced me to their mates (one of which was a large Scottish bloke who kept talking to me but I was so embarrassed because his accent was sooooo thick that I just couldn’t understand him). Needless to say, I felt like an A-hole 😔.

Phil gave me a copy of ‘Middle of Nowhere’ that I cherish to this day.

The point I wanted to make was I was sooooooo blown away by their music, their live show, the visuals and their hospitality. But more importantly, I remember thinking, when I heard this song (Nowhere to Run), that this music and these sounds/production is not something we should be hearing for another 20-30 years. Meaning, it was so advanced, that it was just like, out of this world advanced!! I honestly thought these lovely blokes were from the future, lol.

What’s crazy is, that was 21 years ago and when I listen to it now in 2020, my attitude towards this song, along with so many of their songs, is that it’s still 20+ years ahead of its time and ahead of anything else has ever put out.

These guys are masters of their craft and their gear and they sure know how to get everything out of their gear.

I don’t think I could ever get close to production like this 😔 <sigh>

I love Orbital, and this song is one of their best. It's criminally under-viewed here!

@DjChrisChill

Absolutely, one of their best

Ben. Absolutely agree. As a 50 year old follower of Orbital since the first album, this is one of Orbitals most intense tracks, the crescendo of layering of percussion, melody and otherworldly samples and sondscapes. Not electronic like the other pioneers, but that driving sound that only Orbital ever did. As good for the feet as for the mind.

I love how this song still feels like the future!

@elyadg745

Nothing gets you higher than this song, really early 2000's futuristic utopian tune. Ahead of their times!

@psterud

This was Orbital at their peak, in my opinion. Epic and inspired track.
