Living in the Past
Orbital Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Happy and I'm smiling
Walk a mile to drink your water
You know I'd love to love you
And above you there's no other

We'll go walking out
While others shout of war's disaster
Oh, we won't give in
Let's go living in the past

Once I used to join in
Every boy and girl was my friend
Now there's revolution, but they don't know
What they're fighting

Let us close our eyes
Outside their lives go on much faster
Oh, we won't give in
We'll keep living in the past

Oh, we won't give in
Let's go living in the past

Oh no, no we won't give in
Let's go living in the past

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "Living in the Past" by Orbital portray a sense of nostalgic yearning for a simpler time, away from the conflicts of the present. The opening stanza reflects on the happiness and contentment that comes from being in the presence of a loved one, whose presence is so valuable that the singer is willing to go through great lengths to be with them. The lyrics also suggest that the love between them is unique and unmatched, as there is no other person who could compare.

The second stanza takes a more somber tone as it reflects on the disillusionment the singer has experienced with the world around them. The lyrics suggest that there is a revolution taking place, but it is being fought without a clear understanding of what is truly important. The refrain "Oh, we won't give in/Let's go living in the past" offers a solution to this problem, as the singer suggests that they should turn a blind eye to the outside world and focus on their own happiness and contentment.

In sum, "Living in the Past" is a romanticized portrayal of a simpler time, and offers a solution to the disillusionment of the present by suggesting that we should focus on our own happiness and avoid the chaos of the world around us.

I saw these guys live in 1999 (Jacksonville, FL). Got to hang out with them backstage, Phil gave me a copy of 'Middle of Nowhere' that was just released and at that point, I had only heard 'In Sides' and boy, was I all in!!? That show changed my life and shifted my perspective on Electronic music (I.E. made me realize it would take a lot more hard work than I was putting in to achieve production even close to that.

I remember thinking "Jesus, these guys not only have the gear and know how to use it, but they are 10 steps ahead of the rest. I'd literally never heard those kinds of sounds, musical ideas and drums (Nowhere to Run was the song that knocked my d**k in the dirt | sorry for the colourful metaphor)

That was 21 yrs ago.

Do you know what's changed about my opinion since then?

Not a damn thing!!

They're still 10 steps ahead of the rest in terms of songwriting ideas and original melodies. But mostly with respect to their production (Sound Design and mixing abilities).

They may not be in the limelight as much anymore but as far as I'm concerned, it's like having Lennon & McCartney in retirement. They are, in my book at least, the Beatles of Electronic Music.

The Elder Statesmen and pioneers, still evolving and still very much pioneering.
