Satan
Orbital Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Daddy.
yes son?
What does regret mean?
Well son, a funny thing about regret is, that it is better to regret something you have done. Than to regret something you haven't done.
And by the way, if you see your mom this weekend be sure to tell her... SATAN

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Orbital's "Satan" are quite cryptic and open to interpretation. The song itself is an electronic instrumental with a heavy, driving beat that creates a feeling of tension and unease. The spoken word sample "Daddy. Yes son? What does regret mean?" sets the tone for the song, as the idea of regret is something that can manifest itself in many different ways.

The sample goes on to suggest that it is better to regret something that you have done, rather than not having done something at all. This could be interpreted as an encouragement to take risks and seize opportunities, even if there is a chance that it may not turn out well. The final line of the sample is "And by the way, if you see your mom this weekend be sure to tell her... SATAN." This sudden mention of Satan is jarring and unexpected, creating an ominous atmosphere around the song.

One interpretation of the lyrics could be that they are warning against the dangers of regret and the consequences of not taking risks. The mention of Satan could be seen as a manifestation of the negative consequences that can arise from living a life of caution and fear. Alternatively, the lyrics could be seen as a nod to the idea that embracing one's demons can lead to greater freedom and creativity.

This is one of those songs that will forever run on repeat in my head

@SpasticSpud

This track is simply immense. You can thank the Butthole Surfers for the intro. Sweat Loaf from Locust Abortion Technician. Probably one of the most bizarre and brilliant albums I own.

@Arielrosemusic

When a track sounds just as good now as it did when it was released in the 90s - you know you're a legend!!

@demonhalo67

How times have changed. If the self titled album was released today this pt3 b-side would be a bonus track as well as any other live tracks on a deluxe edition. This song is so good that no one would get the standard edition.

I prefer the six minute full length version of the song but as I understand it it is only available on vinyl.

@enekeke

Amazing track still after all these years

@demonhalo67

I prefer the longer 7 minute version which was released on the Orbital III single reissue in 1995.

@clivecleaver2995

@demonhalo67 They both are equally lame without Kirk Hammett https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JE1_7z-o0aI

@Agma
I have the "Saint" vinyl single that has that version on the B side.

@Jabbawwonky

That opening was from a Butth*le Surfers independent worm saloon album

@equus001
