Call My Name
Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You see the new sensation,
I heard it call your name.
You're running 'round in circles,
You're making right again.
(The) telephone keeps ringing,
Your head is in the sand,
(The) future is unfolding,
But it's not what you had planned.
[chorus]:
No matter what you do,
There's no escape for you.
You say they've gone too far,
(You) said I'd take my car. (** Anyone want to explain that one?? **)
So it always ends the same,
And there's no one else to blame...
But I'd die
If you would call my name.
Caught between two evils,
I should've stayed at home.
To wish upon, and hold the phone,
When in love you want... (** Eh? **)

Oh yes, I'd die,
If you would call my name.

Overall Meaning

The song "Call My Name" by Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark is a commentary on the ills of modern society. The lyrics suggest that people are constantly searching for the next big thing, the new sensation, the latest trend, and this pursuit is leading them to lose touch with themselves and their true desires. The singer of the song is watching someone who is caught up in this cycle, running around in circles, trying to keep up with the latest fad, ignoring reality, and failing to achieve their goals.

The chorus declares, "No matter what you do, there's no escape for you." This is a warning to the person that they are on a dead end road, and that they need to stop and reassess their priorities. The singer is caught in the middle, feeling the pressure of the situation, but still clinging to hope that the person they love will call their name.

The song is a commentary on the power dynamics of modern relationships, where people are often more focused on their own desires than on the needs and wants of their partners. It's a poignant reminder that love and connection require effort and attention, and that without these things, relationships are doomed to fail.

We loved the 80s music, we loved OMD, one of those groups that cannot make a bad song and we loved every song by them, including this one. We enjoyed dancing to it and just listening with friends and enjoying life. Great music is timeless, ageless and just beautiful. The best era in music.
