4th Time Around
Oren Lavie Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

When she said,
"Don't waste your words, they're just lies,"
I cried she was deaf.
And she worked on my face until breaking my eyes,
Then said, "What else you got left?"
It was then that I got up to leave
But she said, "Don't forget,
Everybody must give something back
For something they get."

I stood there and hummed,
I tapped on her drum and asked her how come.
And she buttoned her boot,
And straightened her suit,
Then she said, "Don't get cute."
So I forced my hands in my pockets
And felt with my thumbs,
And gallantly handed her
My very last piece of gum.

She threw me outside,
I stood in the dirt where ev'ryone walked.
And after finding I'd
Forgotten my shirt,
I went back and knocked.
I waited in the hallway, she went to get it,
And I tried to make sense
Out of that picture of you in your wheelchair
That leaned up against

Her Jamaican rum
And when she did come, I asked her for some.
She said, "No, dear."
I said, "Your words aren't clear,
You'd better spit out your gum."
She screamed till her face got so red
Then she fell on the floor,
And I covered her up and then
Thought I'd go look through her drawer.

And, when I was through
I filled up my shoe
And brought it to you.
And you, you took me in,
You loved me then
You didn't waste time.
And I, I never took much,

I never asked for your crutch.
Now don't ask for mine.

Overall Meaning

The song "4th Time Around" by Oren Lavie tells a story of a man who had a rough encounter with a woman, who he perceives as manipulative and controlling. The lyrics suggest that the woman creates a situation where the man is humiliated, made to feel small and insignificant, and that she then demands something from him as payment for the experience. The man tries to reason with the woman, but she is unrelenting and instead throws him out of her house, causing him to feel shameful and embarrassed.

Throughout the song, the man seems to be searching for a sense of identity or purpose, as evidenced by his attempts to communicate with the woman by tapping on her drum or handing her a piece of gum. However, these efforts are met with disdain and rejection, and he ultimately finds more solace in the memories of someone who loved him unconditionally. The line "you loved me then, you didn't waste time" suggests that this other person was able to see the man's worth and value without needing him to prove it or make up for any perceived shortcomings.

The song's lyrics can be interpreted in various ways, such as reflecting on power dynamics in relationships, the struggle to find a sense of self-worth, or the search for meaning in life. The use of vivid imagery and metaphors throughout the song helps to create a sense of surrealism and ambiguity, allowing listeners to find their own meanings and interpretations.

I guess if Radiohead can borrow from Dylan for the title of Subterranean Homesick Alien, then these guys can borrow from Radiohead's arrangement and vibe of that song to make this Dylan cover. Nice version.
