Same, and I can see that too. That's actually probably the idea of it, which they also make fun of in the last lines of the song.

I'm in community college right now, and all I ever feel like doing is just homework and building my major in Music composition(with my goal in life to become a composer/lyricist/playwright/orchestrator for the Musical Theatre someday).

I MIGHT go out with friends(which I've done only twice actually), but more often than not I'm home focussing on school work, practicing piano for my transfer audition to a four year state college, or walking my dogs.
Besides, the only thing I would like to do when I go out(besides eat) is see any select musicals/plays that are available that appeal to me(despite the high price of tickets), or go to the nearest book store that specializes in theatre script/sheet music material(which I can't now! R.I.P. Samuel French West Hollywood).

I don't know if I myself am ever going to look back at this experience with any fond romanticized attention(then again, how can I, since I'm still living it. duh), but I know for sure that I feel nothing about high school. In fact, I'm glad I will not have to go through it again, let alone middle school(shudders).

My oh my what a Paradox("a paradox, a paradox, a most ingenious paradox hahahahahahahaha this paradox"(referencing Pirates of Penzance, for those asking)) are the miss matches and perceived inconsistencies of life, so sublimely and honestly reflected in shows like this, Hamilton, Shows by Stephen Sondheim(composer/lyricist of Sweeney Todd, Into the Woods, Company, etc.), The Book of Mormon(which the composer of this show, Robert Lopez(also the composer of the songs in Frozen, kiddies) was also involved in), etc. :)

I'm in community college right now, but If you don't mind me asking, What does that line mean, and why is it so sad?

Is it that they are wishing they harvested more memories than they did, hoping they'd have a more clear recollection of what they experienced? A guiding tool for how to move on as a working adult? A chance to have better assurance of what they've accomplished so far, when they now feel so empty with what little they're doing now?

this is honestly one of the most beautiful songs ever written in my opinion. the lyrics, the chord progressions, the key changes, the meaning, the nostalgia, the chorale-style harmonies, the flashes of humour - and then the lines that just punch you in the gut. "i wish i had taken more pictures" gets me every single time. whether or not you like musicals, this song truly speaks to me and i think it's beautiful.

As a guy going into his senior year of college, trust me it's not going to get any easier. It's going to feel like a lot of doors are being closed, but just know that it's so that other doors can open for you. You're going to change a LOT, and life will probably take you somewhere you don't expect, but as long as you keep moving forward with an open mind, things will work out.

I'm 13 and this song is one of those things that helps me understand adulthood a little more. I found the musical on the Internet( wasn't that song funny/my parents didn't exactly know all of the content and they didn't watch it with me. They would have stopped me in either case) and the whole thing made me think about the "now what" of getting out of college right now. I know that the content of the musical is a lot more for adults, but I was able to handle it, and it's relatable even to me somehow, of course that might have had more to do with the acting than anything else. Still it was one of those things that made me think about life in general, and possibly saved me from a lot of emotional confusion and pain later in life, but if these things are inevitable at least I know they're coming and most importantly that they are survivable.

I first heard this song when I was about your age. I knew that eventually I would hear this song and find it so surreal and and fitting. And it absolutely, 100% is. Don't be afraid of leaving college, there are cool things ahead of you. But if your college experience was anything like mine, enjoy every single second. And listen to what he says. I graduated a month ago and I already feel like this. I had such a great time! I didn't even realize what a great time I had until I graduated. If you're starting college soon or are already there enjoy every minute of it! Go to campus events, join an organization, go Greek, go to events in your dorm even if they are kinda lame, do it all!

I first listened to Avenue Q songs when I was a young teenager. Listening to the album now when I'm about to turn 25, the soundtrack hits so much harder. Adulthood has been rough, and I'm glad there's a musical that talks about it and shows you it's ultimately gonna be ok.

I first heard this song when I was a senior in high school. I was taking Senior Acting. We watched a documentary on the making of Avenue Q, Boy George and Wicked. I knew there was something special about this song then, but obviously the lyrics didn't resonate with me at the time. I heard it again about halfway through college. It started to hit me then. The dorms, a meal plan and the whole "college lifestyle" was indicative of freshman year. By that point I leased an apartment off campus, was firm on my major and many of my friends had already graduated. But I was still in college, so everything was fine. I just listened for the first time since. I'm 28 now... God damn....

Dammit, this song hits extremely close to home for me. I often find myself simply asking "How do I go back?" Not just how do I go back to college, but how do I go back to when life was simple or at least when I felt like I had a better idea of what I wanted to do with my life. I ask that so often to myself I even made a damn sub Reddit (r/HowDoIGoBack). One think I at least know now is that, I honestly should have been on medication. Who knows how much I messed myself up NOT getting onto medication to help me better control my mental health... It's a very bittersweet thought, and often I feel like crying.

I turned 48 this month. I was just saying to a woman on Facebook (whom I met in a Jewish singles speed dating event this summer) that I can't think of anything that would make me happy, other than being a professor at Oxford. She said: "Ohh, that sounds like a good plan. Go back to school. But then you'll be like the characters in Avenue Q." And she sent me this video. I saw this show 10 years ago in NYC, but forgot about this song.

Every day, all day, I still with I were 18, in first year university. That's when I first kissed a girl. That's when I'd come back to my dorm room and find notes written on my door, like "Come meet us in the caf." I visited Lori down the hall and she tried to kiss me and I ran back to my room because I didn't know what to do with a girl. In second year, my friend Loic and I walked around residence, serenading girls with my guitar. I worked student security and walked around residence, and girls who liked me would get excited that I was coming down the hall. I wrote love songs and recorded them in the bathroom for nice, echoey acoustic, with my friends singing back up. I moved into an apartment off campus for 4th year. I should have stayed in residence while I could, because I've never been able to find that joy again. All my life, I've been trying to recapture it. And just this summer, during the pandemic, it occurred to me that I should have done a Master's and PhD, so I could have always been on a school campus, surrounded by students and smart faculty. I could have been informing and entertaining so many people. But instead, I took advertising in college for a year, and then worked as a copywriter. It was never fulfilling. I tried living in condos, to get that dorm feel, but it never came close to what living in residence was like. I should have at least married my girlfriends from university, but I broke up with everyone, and now I'm childless and alone. I can't think of any job or living situation that would make me happy now, other than being a professor at Oxford. Could I go back to school now, do a Master's until I'm 51, and then get a PhD, and be a professor at 60? What if I liked it? It would destroy me to think about how much fun I could have had being a professor in my 20s and 30s and even 40s. But it's already destroying me to think about it. The only thing I can think of to do now is to do lots of videos for YouTube, to somehow gain a following, which maybe would make me feel less alone. But god, it makes me so sad that living in residence was so magical, and that after that, nothing in life even comes close. What is the point of living back the age of 22 at all? I guess if you're smart enough to stay in school, life could be great. But it never occurred to me. I don't know why. I'm such a fool.

(of course, I didn't have any relations with my TAs, but my Chem Lab 2 TA certainly seemed fond of me. After the second week of Lab, he always "conveniently" ran into me around campus, and was always happy to see me... lol)

This song fits my school during finals week. There are always a load of people studying for finals and working on cheat sheets at 4 in the morning usually the ones that had been there since 11 pm.

Going to head back to college in my mid 20's-late 20's. I will definitely know the feels of that line "these kids are so much younger than me." Didn't get the typical college experience as most did as I went to a Technical College.

grod85 nah, you will fit in. When I started college in 2011, I was 19. My lab partner for computer accounting was a 76-year old woman. We passed the class together, but I don't think she ever finished her degree.

absolutely! When life really hits you - REAL life! And it will hit you again and again. There will be problems you never thought about before. In college you really think "I am totally gonna go far" and afterwards real life tells you what you your degree is worth and what it means to find a good job and arranging your life yourself.

This song makes me miss my college buddies. It's also the reason I took a few hundred pictures my freshman year. I don't want to look back and wish I had taken more pictures. I hate that feeling.

the end of the song is exactly what I though when I started back in business school this past year. I'm 28, and a good portion of the students on campus are 6-10 years younger than me.... so far, no one can tell....so that is a good thing.

lol I know right? I was on work experience and I got to visit my old primary school and it was such a mind blowing thing to be there again and it made me realise how easy and simple life was then. None of the financial worries, sexuality, needing to fit in, exams, it was just happy lol.

Trust me, don't worry about this sort of thing yet. There's so much stuff that's going happen before college, so don't worry about that yet. Focus on what you've coming up in the closer future.

The "wish I had taken more pictures" line gets the most mixed audience reaction from different showings. Sometimes its like a sad "daww" and sometimes it gets one of the biggest laughs.
