you
Original Broadway Cast Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Without you, the ground thaws
The rain falls, the grass grows
Without you, the seeds root
The flowers bloom

The children play, the stars gleam
The poets dream, the eagles fly
Without you, the earth turns
The sun burns but I die
Without you, without you

The breeze warms, the girl smiles
The cloud moves without you
The tides change, the boys run
The oceans crash, the crowds roar
The days soar, the babies cry

Without you, the moon glows
The river flows but I die
Without you, the world revives
Colors renew but I know blue
Only blue, lonely blue
Within in me, blue, without you

Without you, the hand gropes
The ear hears, the pulse beats
Without you, the eyes gaze
The legs walk, the lungs breathe

The mind churns, the heart yearns
The tears dry without you
Life goes on but I'm gone
'Cause I die, without you

Without you, without you
Without you

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to the Original Broadway Cast's song, "Without You," convey a sense of dependency and longing for another person. The lyrics start by describing the natural world around us and how it functions without the presence of the person whom the singer addresses. The ground thaws, the rain falls, and the grass grows without this person. However, as the song progresses, the lyrics reveal that even though the world goes on functioning, the singer cannot manage to do so without the other person. Life continues, the children play, the stars gleam, and the poets dream, but none of it holds any significance without the other person. The singer is consumed by a sense of emptiness and despair, and this person's absence leads to the crushing weight of loneliness.

The song is particularly impactful because it captures the feeling of losing someone who is an important part of one's life. It illustrates the fact that life goes on, even though we may feel that it has lost all meaning or purpose without the person we love. The lyrics are simple but powerful, and they express the raw emotion that comes with a painful breakup. The song does not offer any solutions or platitudes, but instead, it provides a space for the listener to feel the full weight of their emotions.

You can't stop an avalanche
As it races down the hill
You can try to stop the seasons, girl
But you know you never will
And you can try to stop my dancin' feet
But I just cannot stand still
'Cause the world keeps spinning
'Round and 'round
And my heart's keeping time
To the speed of sound
I was lost 'til I heard the drums
Then I found my way
'Cause you can't stop the beat
Ever since this whole world began
A woman found out if she shook it
She could shake up a man
And so I'm gonna shake and shimmy it
The best that I can today
'Cause you cant stop the motion of the ocean
Or the sun in the sky
You can wonder if you wanna, but I never ask why
And if you try to hold me down I'm gonna spit in your eye and say
That you can't stop the beat!
You can't stop the river as it rushes to the sea
You can try to stop the hands of time, but you know it just can't be!
And if they try to stop us, Seaweed, I've got the N double A.C.P.
'Cause the world keeps spinnin' round and round
And my heart's keepin' time to the speed of sound
I was lost 'til I heard the drums, then I found my way
'Cause you can't stop the beat!
Ever since we first saw the light
A man and woman like to shake it on a Saturday night
So I'm gonna shake and shimmy it with all of my might today
'Cause you cant stop the motion of the ocean or the rain from above
You can try to stop the paradise we're dreamin' of
But you cannot stop the rhythm of two hearts in love to stay
'Cause you cant stop the beat!
You can't stop my happiness, 'cause I like the way I am
And you just can't stop my knife and fork when I see a Christmas Ham!
So, if you don't like the way I look, well, I just don't give a damn!
'Cause the world keeps spinnin' round and round
And my hearts keepin' time to the speed of sound
I was lost 'til I heard the drums, then I found my way
'Cause you can't stop the beat
Ever since this whole world began
A woman found out if she shook it she could shake up a man
And so I'm gonna shake and shimmy it the best that I can today!
'Cause you can't stop the motion of the ocean or the sun in the sky
You can wonder, if you wanna, but I never ask why
And if you try to hold me down, I'm gonna spit in your eye and say
That you can't stop the beat!
Oh, Oh, Oh
You can't stop today (No!)
As it comes speeding 'round the track (oooh, child yes!)
Yesterday is history (be gone!)
And it's never comin' back! (look ahead, 'cause)
'Cause tomorrow is a brand new day, and it don't know white from black (yeah!)
'Cause the world keeps spinnin' round and round
And my heart's keepin' time to the speed of sound
I was lost 'til I heard the drums, then I found my way
'Cause you can't stop the beat!
Ever since we first saw the light
A man and woman like to shake it on a Saturday night
So I'm gonna shake and shimmy it with all of my might today!
'Cause you can't stop the motion of the ocean, or the rain from above
They can try to stop the paradise we're dreamin' of
But you cannot stop the rhythm of two hearts in love to stay
'Cause you can't stop the beat!
Aah, aah, aah
Ahh, ahh, ahh
Ahh, ahh, ahh ahh
Ever since we first saw the sign
A man or woman like to shake it when the day is ooh ooh
And so we're gonna shake and shimmy it and have some fun today!
'Cause you can't stop the motion of the ocean or the rain from above
You can try to stop the paradise we're dreamin' of
But you cannot stop the rhythm of two hearts in love to stay!
'Cause you can't stop the beat!
You can't stop the beat
You can't stop the beat
You can't stop the beat
You can't stop the beat

@manuelorozco7760

+Bianca Dela Torre IKR Kerry Butler is a good singer. Also spread the word, Hairspray is NBC's live TV musical

@manuelorozco7760

Christian Carrington I agree Ariana sounds awesome but I don't want to compare her to Kerry or Amanda.

@mariaviudez7281

Christian Carrington No she doesn't. She sounds waaaay to modern especially because this is based on the 60s. The white girls didnt sing like that in the 60s. If she were to use her old Broadway voice she would have done perfect. 😊😊

@alexcarey5974

Manuel Orozco this wasn't the one Ariana was in

@carlosalejandroalvarenga4913

Alex Carey that's not what they are saying. Someone said that Ariana was better, but someone said otherwise.

Sebastian Fierro for real though that's what we called it. my freaking music director was a jazz major and would speed it up and would go "I forgot that I wasn't going the tempo". I'm like...
