Angel of Music

Where in the world have you been hiding?
Really, you were perfect
I only wish I knew your secret
Who is this new tutor?
Father once spoke of an angel
Now as I sing I can sense him
And I know he's here
Here in this room, he calls me softly
Somewhere inside, hiding
Somehow I know he's always with me
He, the unseen genius
Christine, you must have been dreaming
Stories like this can't come true
Christine, you're talking in riddles
And it's not like you
Angel of music, guide and guardian
Grant to me your glory
Who is this angel?
This
Angel of music, hide no longer
Secret and strange angel
He's with me even now
Your hands are cold
All around me
Your face, Christine, it's white
It frightens me
Don't be frightened
The song "Angel of Music" from the musical "The Phantom of the Opera" is sung by the character Christine. The song starts with her praising her singing partners and wishing to know their secret to singing so beautifully. She then mentions her father, who used to speak of an angel to her when she was young, and how she now senses his presence while singing. Christine portrays herself as someone who is intrigued and fascinated by this angel, as she believes that he is the secret behind her singing. However, Raoul, the hero of the play who is in love with Christine, perceives her fascination with this mysterious angel to be foolishness and calls her out on it.
The song uses elements of foreshadowing, as it is clear to the audience that Christine's angel tutor is not an ordinary man but someone altogether different. The lyrics hint towards the fantastical and supernatural elements that the story builds up as it progresses. The song contrasts the light and playful sequences of music used in the beginning with the dark sounding and ominous lines as the song reaches its climax, which suggests that perhaps something sinister is going on behind the scenes.

Hard to find this version of the lyrics so here it is:
Nighttime sharpens, heightens each sensation
Darkness wakes and stirs imagination
Silently the senses abandoned their defenses
Helpless to resist the notes I write
For I compose the music of the night
Slowly, gently, night unfurls its splendor
Grasp it, sense it, tremulous and tender
Hearing is believing
Music is deceiving
Hard as lightning, soft as candlelight
Dare you trust the music of the night?
Close your eyes for your eyes will only tell the truth
And the truth isn’t what you want to see
In the dark it is easy to pretend
That the truth is what it ought to be
Softly, deftly, music shall caress you
Hear it, feel it, secretly possess you
Open up your mind
Let your fantasies unwind
In this darkness which you know you cannot fight
The darkness of the music of the night
Close your eyes
Start a journey through a strange new world
Leave all thoughts of the world you knew before
Close your eyes and let music set you free
Only then can you belong to me
Floating, falling, sweet intoxication
Touch me, trust me, savor each sensation
Let the dream begin, let your darkest side give in
To the power of the music that I write
The power of the music of the night
You alone can make this song take flight
Help me make the music of the night

Nobody sings "The Music of the Night" quite like Michael Crawford does. It's phenomenal and heartfelt.
@harlequinhead2008
A thousand times YES!!! He captures every emotion in just this one song - he owns the one!

Fr I mostly listen to the original more than any other ones he's voice is so beautiful and he just fits the part perfectly
@angelnunn
I prefer ramin, he has strong voice, he sings with passion. But of course, Crawford sounds just as beautiful.
@simplystreeptacular
@@angelnunn The way Ramin sings it makes me swoon. But Michael Crawford could sing me straight into bed with this song. His voice just has this insanely sensual, seductive quality I've never yet heard another actor quite match.

@@angelnunn I could’nt care less about The Phantom of the Opera, no actor caught my attention, I fell a sleep during the movie - but then I saw Ramin Karimloo play the phantom on my telly. Suddenly I payed intense attention. Outstanding Singer, brilliant actor. Noone above or even beside Ramin Karimloo in my opinion!
