@@safiya2412 Evita opened in the West End in February of 1978, more than a year before the Broadway production opened. Noah Body has the years correct. In America, Evita actually ran for a period in Los Angeles and San Francisco before it went to Broadway in September of 1979. I saw the Los Angeles production all those years ago. In terms of performing the role on stage, Elaine Paige is the original creator of the role, while Patti LuPone followed. Julie Covington declined to do the West End production, though it was offered to her. My personal favorite performance of this song- for whatever that is worth- is LuPone's performance on youtube under the title: Patti LuPone EPIC "Don't Cry for Me Argentina". This was from the 1981 Grammys, when the Broadway cast album was nominated. Her emotional intensity is mesmerizing. Not in costume, no blonde wig, no set, just a two-dimensional outline of the balcony on the floor and a Grammy audience rather than the Broadway theater. She needs none of the trappings, yet LuPone owns the house like she is Evita herself, baring her soul to the masses.

I've heard both Patti LuPone and Elaine Paige sing "Don't Cry for Me Argentina". They both have a very different way of interpreting the role and this song - but they did have one thing in common: each portrayed an in control, powerful woman making a speech to the crowds, or rather we the audience. I honestly like both renditions.

At least Madonna’s version actually have her vocals in sync with the music. Lupone and Paige just love doing needless pauses and drawn out notes and then rushed through the song to catch up with the music.

Now, in "Sunset Boulevard", her dragged-out vibratos kind of wreck "The Lady's Paying", which is supposed to be snappy and fast. Even though Glenn Close doesn't have anything like LuPone's voice, she did it much better.

I love patti lupone. I was 10 years old and heard this commercial and it wasn’t long and I had no ideal what or who this women she was. But at ten years old she moved me with this angelic voice and Beautiful lyrics. I was a black kid in south Philadelphia. But when the commercial came on you looked at it. And was mesmerized this wasn’t a black women

Just don't expect very many to have LuPone's range, clarity, and power. She is really something special. I am nonplussed that even as a child you would think a good voice had to be a black voice. Sigh. Even as a child in the South, I knew that good voices came wrapped in different colors.

This is the original US cast, but it's not the original cast.  The original cast (on a concept album) was headed by the incomparable Julie Covington.  The first stage performance was in London, headed by Elaine Paige.

this is brilliant! hadn't thought about it in decades. i saw her original performance on broadway in '79. never been a 'musicals' person but this was & continues to be the singular thrilling exception. didn't take long afterwards for me to bring home the soundtrack; played it non-stop for months. this track's untouchable melody, lyrics, & the way she looked that night are etched in my brain to this day. un-frickin-forgettable!.

TY! Patti Lupone is truly a star & I wish I had seen this show on Broadway. I did see her one woman show at the Broward Center a few years ago. Bit of trivia - she is from Northport where, if I'm not mistaken, her father was a principal & many years ago, I saw her brother, Robert, perform in the Importance of Being Earnest at CW Post College.

+jeffrey a Madonna fought very hard to get the roll of Evita. The director and writers didn't want her either, but she was persistent. They told her she couldn't sing and she would need to take singing lessons, so Madonna took singing lessons. That is how she got the part. Unfortunately, Patti and the other who played Evita on stage were a bit older by the time they made the movie.

Just to be technical, Patti's recording is actually the original American recording, produced in LA during the pre-Broadway run of the show. While the principals are the same, there were a few changes in the ensemble for the Broadway opening. It is very nearly, but not exactly, a Broadway recording.

I think people were too hard on Madonna. She wasn't right for the part, but it's not her fault that they chose her. And well, I really think she did her best, despite the fact that she was vocally inadequate. Her acting though is quite alright, pretty good even. I think she identified with Eva Peron a lot. This said, I must declare my eternal love and admiration for Patti Lupone, who was the best Evita and will never possibly be surpassed.

When Hollywood makes a movie from a musical, it usually scales down the big Broadway musicals voices. Gone are the days of musicals with people like Judy Garland, Liza Minnelli and Barbra Streisand. Actors who are also singers. Madonna is a great lip syncher and if you have watched any of her music videos you will know this. This was a great vehicle for Madonna because it was just one long music video.

Yeah, Madonna was a horrible choice for the part! She's nothing like Evita, slutting herself up to get to the top in the name of "pushing boundaries" and "making a statement"! Oh wait......

In all seriousness though, even as a hardcore theatre geek, Madonna's casting didn't bother me much. Yeah, her singing voice wasn't powerful like Patti Lupone or Elaine Paige, but there was a vulnerability to it that fit the character. Her rendition of "You Must Love Me" is really quite heartbreaking. There have been many cases of stunt casting in musical film history much more egregious than this (Carrie Underwood in The Sound of Music Live, Russell Crowe in Les Miz, Gerard Butler in Phantom, Diana Ross in The Wiz, Lucille Ball in Mame, just to name a few).

I think the Madonna Evita is greatly under-rated. Madonna is not in my favorites list but its real possible that over time her version and the movie itself might be re-discovered. Bandares did a splendid job as Che but it was a box office fail. Again, maybe a re-release in 5 or 10 years?

Thanks for your comment. The real Evita was in fact loved by many but she was also hated equally as much. She and her husband Juan had people murdered in a dictatorship style of an oppressive regime. They were also Nazi sympathizers who helped numerous Nazi was criminals escape from Germany after WWII.
