Don't Cry For Me Argentina
Original Cast Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

It won't be easy, you'll think it strange
When I try to explain how I feel
That I still need your love after all that I've done
You won't believe me

All you will see is a girl you once knew
Although she's dressed up to the nines
At sixes and sevens with you
I had to let it happen, I had to change

Couldn't stay all my life down at heel
Looking out of the window, staying out of the sun
So I chose freedom
Running around trying everything new

But nothing impressed me at all
I never expected it to
Don't cry for me Argentina
The truth is I never left you

All through my wild days
My mad existence
I kept my promise
Don't keep your distance

And as for fortune, and as for fame
I never invited them in
Though it seemed to the world they were all I desired
They are illusions

They're not the solutions they promised to be
The answer was here all the time
I love you and hope you love me
Don't cry for me Argentina......

Don't cry for me Argentina
The truth is I never left you
All through my wild days
My mad existence

I kept my promise
Don't keep your distance
Have I said too much? There's nothing more I can think of to say to you
But all you have to do is look at me to know that every word is true

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "Don't Cry For Me Argentina" from the musical "Evita" tell the story of the character Eva Perón, who is addressing the people of Argentina. Eva is acknowledging that her life and choices may seem strange and difficult to understand for those who know her. She still craves their love and support despite all the mistakes she has made. She recognizes that others may only see her as the same girl they once knew, although she appears glamorous and sophisticated now. Through her journey of self-discovery, she had to let go of her old life and embrace change.

Eva explains that she couldn't spend her whole life feeling downtrodden and limited. She had to seek freedom and explore new experiences. However, she admits that none of these experiences fulfilled her or impressed her as much as she thought they would. She never expected material things like fortune and fame to be the answer to her desires. In reality, they were mere illusions and not the solutions she sought. She reassures Argentina that she never truly left them, expressing her love and hoping to receive love in return. Eva acknowledges her past of wild days and a chaotic existence but assures that she has kept her promises. Eva concludes by saying that her words are true, and anyone can see it by simply looking at her.

Don't cry for me is a Babbling metaphor for the cancerous malignancy Satan brought to God's beautiful Argentina. Corrupting gullible suckers with greedy Covetous dreams of "Equality,"  "Sharing [others] Wealth," "Social Justas." Etc.
. But instead delivering only death and financial ruin. When YOU or a Nation FAILS to follow it's Creators instructions,            Death, Destruction and Eternal Damnation,.... is your only reward.
I do cry for Argentina!!!!
"There's nothing more I can think of to say to you

But all you have to do

Is look at me to know

That every word is true." May God help us all.  Steve

I also saw Patti Lupone play Evita on Broadway, an experience I will never every forget. Magic. The guy who played Che was unbelievable.

@ddivincenzo1

Was that Mandy Patinkin?

@suebrown4913

Yes, it was Mandy Pantinkin. A few years ago they had an 8 week Broadway performance, as a duet, performing various songs. Both are stellar performers/ singers/actors

@SJRD18

Mandy Patinkin. I've seen him 3 times live. I adore him.

@mcrider333

Was there in '79 and saw the original as well. Great show and Patti WAS Evita.

@gaylejohnson4663

YES, ABSOLUTELY! LOVE BOTH OF THEM! ❤😊

No one can touch her! This is one of those songs that no one can take away from the original singer.  Patti did it first and she does it best.  Just like "I dreamed a dream" when she originated Fantine in Les Mis.  Gotta love this lady.

+Figlio San Chirico I disagree, listen to Karen Carpenter. I actually like both versions. Patti's version is very clear and powerful while Karen's version is more emotional and song with more base.

@d.g.164

WOW!  I had no idea Karen Carpenter even recorded this song.  I love her too.  Her voice is so clear and clean.  I will definitely take a listen, Martin.  Thank you!

@@noahbody5987 Yes but the Broadway version is the original as "Evita" is not a West End rather than a Broadway production.
