I'm Going Home
Original London Cast Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

On the day I went away, goodbye
Was all I had to say, now I
I want to come again and stay, oh my my
Smile, and that will mean that I may

Cause I've seen blue skies, through the tears
In my eyes
And I realise, I'm going home.

Everywhere it's been the same, feeling
Like I'm outside in the rain, wheeling
Free, to try and find a game, dealing
Cards for sorrow, cards for pain

'Cause I've seen blue skies through the tears
In my eyes
And I realise, I'm going home.

I'm going home, I'm going home.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of the song "I'm Going Home" by the Original London Cast are simple yet powerful, reflecting a deep emotional experience of the singer. The song starts with the singer bidding goodbye to someone on the day they leave. The composer uses the repetition of the word "I" in the first two lines to highlight the singer's self-reflection and perhaps a sense of isolation. The singer expresses a desire to return and stay, which is reinforced in the repetition of the phrase "oh my my." The lines show how much the singer yearns to come back and be accepted.

The next lines describe the singer's journey, which appears to be a lonely and painful one. Being "outside in the rain" is a metaphor for being alone and exposed to the elements. "Wheeling" describes the sense of aimlessness and lack of direction. The singer appears to be playing a game, but it is not a fun game. It is a game of dealing "cards for sorrow, cards for pain." This line is used to evoke the idea of life as a game of chance that is unpredictable and where every turn of the card represents a challenge.

The chorus ties everything together, stating, "I'm going home." The repetitive use of the phrase emphasizes the strong desire to return to a place of comfort and belonging. The singer reveals that despite the difficult journey, they have seen "blue skies through the tears," which suggests that there is hope and perhaps promises of joy once they reach home. The phrase "I realize" suggests a moment of clarity, where the singer comes to an understanding of what they really want, which is to go home.

Overall, the song "I'm Going Home" is a testament to the universal human need for comfort and belonging. The song's poignancy lies in its ability to evoke the complex emotions associated with journeys away from home and the longed-for, joyous reunion.

Train Girl

Absolutely LOVE Tim Curry. Beautiful voice, fine and wonderful actor also very humble, human, gracious, warm and lovely to his adoring fans and genuinely makes time for them. What an amazing, absolute gentleman. Hoping he will recover fully from his stroke. If you ever read this Tim Curry ( highly unlikely ) I send much love and genuine best wishes from London. England :-) xxxxx

Tim curry is the only one that can play this part. I saw the rocky horror show in 1978 it was playing in a theatre in the kings road and I often wonder if it was him in the cast back then, I was a mere 17 year old.

Okawan Lee

The little breaks in his voice OMG. And I thought that the movie version was my favorite when this existed 😫🤞
