I'M A MAN
Original Television Soundtrack Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Now when I was a little boy
At the age of five
I had somethin' in my pocket
Keep a lot of folks alive

Now I'm a man
Made twenty-one
You know baby
We can have a lot of fun

I'm a man
I spell m-a-n, man

All you pretty women
Stand in line
I can make love to you baby
In an hour's time

I'm a man
I spell m-a-n, man

I goin' back down
To kansas to
Bring back the second cousin
Little john the conqueroo

I'm a man
I spell m-a-n, man

The line I shoot
Will never miss
The way I make love to 'em
They can't resist

I'm a man
I spell m-a-n, man

Overall Meaning

The song "I'm a Man" by The Original Television Soundtrack is a classic blues song that reflects on masculinity and sexual prowess. The song begins with the singer reflecting on his youth, where he had "somethin'" in his pocket that kept a lot of people alive. It is unclear what exactly the "something" is, but it could be an allusion to a phallus or a metaphor for his potential as a man. He then proclaims that he's now a man who's twenty-one and can have a lot of fun. The rest of the song is a declaration of his sexual prowess and his ability to attract women. He invites all "pretty women" to stand in line because he can make love to them in an hour's time. He even declares that he can go back to Kansas to bring back his second cousin, Little John, the conqueroo, indicating that he's so irresistible that even relatives can't resist his charm.

Through the lyrics, the singer is expressing his confidence in his masculinity and his sexual power. He spells out "man" to assert his identity and pride in his gender. The singer's proclamation that he can make love to a woman in an hour's time is a reflection of the gender dynamics of the time, where men were typically supposed to be the initiators of sexual activity. The lyrics also allude to African-American folklore, particularly Little John the Conqueroo, who was a mythical figure thought to possess magical powers that could control women.

Overall, "I'm a Man" is a classic blues song that is an ode to masculinity and sexual power. It reflects the gender dynamics of its time, while also alluding to African American folklore.

DENIES x

[Verse 1: Brittany, Jude&Ryan]
My friends say that I'm crazy
(You crazy girl)
Cause I give you my love
(OoOouu!)
But you my little sexy baby
You do it to me good

[Pre-Chorus: Jude, Ryan]
I like to have you all around both day and night
I love the way you take me out to wine and dine
They say I need to slow it down
But I don't mind, cause they don't understand
That I don't need no man, no I don't need no man

[Chorus: Together]
To make me feel good
Let that be understood
Do me like you know you should
No I don't-I don't need no man
I got a real job
I got my own car
And I'll Protect my heart
No I don't-I don't need no man
And you know
I'll send you running toward the door
Go, go, gooo
They just don't understand
That I don't no need man
But you know that I ain't playing
Cause I don't need no man
No I don't need no man

[Verse 2: Brittany]
I don't need no man, man, man
Love the way you like to hold my hand, hand, hand
Oh such a gentlemen you give me what I want
And if I had the choice I'd never leave this man alone

[Pre-Chorus: Jude, Ryan]
I like to have you all around both day and night
I love the way you take me out to wine and dine
They say I need to slow it down
But I don't mind, cause they don't understand
That I don't need no man, no I don't need no man

[Chorus: Together]
To make me feel good
Let that be understood
Do me like you know you should
No I don't-I don't need no man
I got a real job
I got my own car
And I'll Protect my heart
No I don't-I don't need no man
And you know
I'll send you running toward the door
Go, go, gooo
They just don't understand
That I don't no need man
But you know that I ain't playing
Cause I don't need no man
No I don't need no man

[Bridge: Brittany, Jude, Ryan]
I don't need no man but I know you know
That boy you are the only one I wanna be loving on
Aye just don't get too comfortable right now that I'm feeling you
I let it all burn if you show me you want me too
I don't need no drama in my life won't deal with it
I ain't about to worry all night you know this
Love come wrapped up right with a ribbon on it
And I don't need no man to make me happy I really want you
But I don't need no man

[Chorus: Together]
To make me feel good
Let that be understood
Do me like you know you should
No I don't-I don't need no man
I got a real job
I got my own car
And I'll Protect my heart
No I don't-I don't need no man
And you know
I'll send you running toward the door
Go, go, gooo
They just don't understand
That I don't no need man
But you know that I ain't playing
Cause I don't need no man
No I don't need no man

I feel like the actress who played Simone could have definitely played Rue from Euphoria too. She gives off the same mannerisms as Zendaya's performance, (not that I dislike Zendaya's: she's perfect for the role; I just think the girl who played Simone would have been able to too).

Trevor Victor

It was basic the same characteristics for both roles

KENDRA C. well Brittany does have similar problems so I am not surprised I watched euphoria but since Brittany and zendaya both did really good in both shows I love them both but Brittany would have been a amazing surprise to Euphoria and the act she put in star is the exact act that Zendaya put into Euphoria but Brittany would have made a better appearance I agree with you but in a different way

Jiselle terrell

I actually think so to they have very similar problems and how simone plays in star if she took that act and put it in Euphoria it would be a hit but euphoria is already a hit but with simone it would be amazing you read my mind❀

@tienestostoneslet’s not do that’s don’t tear another woman down to lift one up and zendaya owes her success to ZENDAYA and zendaya only period.
