Giles:
You're not ready for the world outside
You keep pretending, but you just can't hide
I know I said that i'd be standing by your side
But I...
Your path's unbeaten, and it's all uphill
And you can meet it, but you never will
And i'm the reason that yo'ur standing still
But I...
I wish I could say the right words
To lead you through this land
Wish i could play the father
And take you by the hand
Wish I could stay
But now i understand
I'm standing in the way
The cries around you, you don't hear at all
'Cause you know I'm here o take that call
So you just lie there,
When you should be standing tall
But I...
I wish i could lay your arms down
And let you rest at last
Wish i could slay your demons
But now that time has passed
Wish i could stay
Your stalwart Standing Fast

But I'm standing in the way
I'm just standing in the way

Overall Meaning

The song "Standing" by the Original Television Soundtrack (OST) is a moving and poignant piece that captures the feelings of a mentor or a father-figure towards a person he has mentored, who is yet to find his feet in the world. The lyrics evoke the sense of helplessness that such mentors often feel, as they see their charge get stuck in a rut, unwilling or unable to break free and take control of their lives. In the song, Giles is speaking to someone who, despite his promising potential, is unable to make the best of his life. He recognizes that he may have contributed to this stagnation, but also knows that it is not possible for him to continue playing the role of a father-figure forever. He wishes he could have done much more, but finally acknowledges he is standing in the way.

Giles starts by saying that the person he is talking to is not ready for the world outside, despite all the pretending. He knows that he has been supporting him and standing by his side, but now it seems that he is the one impeding his progress. The person's path is unbeaten, and it is all uphill, declaring that he can meet it, but he never will. Giles thinks that he is the reason that he is standing still, and it has come to a stage where he wishes he could say the right words to lead him through the land, but he can't play the father figure anymore. We see that Giles is torn between doing what he feels is right and the empathy he has for his charge.

The second verse shows how despite the cries from the outside world, the person does not seem to hear it. Giles recognizes that he is there to take the call whenever he calls but knows that the person is not standing tall. In an empathetic tone, he wishes he could lay the person's arms down, let him rest at last, and slay his demons, which suggests that he wishes he could release him from his current predicament. He wishes he could be his stalwart standing fast, but he knows that he is standing in the way.

Overall, the song is instrumental in conveying the message of needing to let go of those who need to grow and find their feet. Giles has recognized that his help has been valuable, but it is time to let this person make his own path in life. The song "Standing" by the Original Television Soundtrack is a profound piece that underscores the need to be empathetic and let people grow in their way.

FUN FACT: this OST goes so well with Fallout: New Vegas you'd swear it was custom made for the game. Mod a custom radio station in and drop all the files in it and it's just beautiful.

Thanks! Its no problem at all. I have a mod to add older fallout soundtrack to the ambient background so "Gold Slouch" comes up quite often in my travels.

@Brandon Ledford Holy Moly. Thanks for that interesting little tidbit. You are now officially (for the next 24 hours anyway, that's as far as my authority to declare such things goes) THE MAN

Fun fact: The first 35 seconds of this video is a tune that is used in Fallout 2. Mark Morgan and Snuffy Walden were actually mutual collaborators. Listen to The Stand's version, then listen to "Gold Slouch" in the Fallout 2 soundtrack and skip to 0:55 seconds and you will hear the familiar tune.

When I watched the film for the first time this part hit me most. Great music and great cast.

Thank you. This is my favorite part too. It stuck in my memory from childhood. Greetings from Poland. But I think in the movie was slower version of this. I think it is better to take it from the movie from the end of the 3rd part or in the part 4 after after those three had left one. I think you will feel the difference and you will know what I mean.

Thank you, I was looking for this one.
