Oh Holy Night
Orioles The Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

O holy night! The stars are brightly shining,
It is the night of the dear Saviour's birth.
Long lay the world in sin and error pining.
Till He appeared and the Spirit felt its worth.
A thrill of hope the weary world rejoices,
For yonder breaks a new and glorious morn.
Fall on your knees! Oh, hear the angel voices!
O night divine, the night when Christ was born;
O night, O holy night, O night divine!
O night, O holy night, O night divine!

Led by the light of faith serenely beaming,
With glowing hearts by His cradle we stand.
O'er the world a star is sweetly gleaming,
Now come the wise men from out of the Orient land.
The King of kings lay thus lowly manger;
In all our trials born to be our friends.
He knows our need, our weakness is no stranger,
Behold your King! Before him lowly bend!
Behold your King! Before him lowly bend!

Truly He taught us to love one another,
His law is love and His gospel is peace.
Chains he shall break, for the slave is our brother.
And in his name all oppression shall cease.
Sweet hymns of joy in grateful chorus raise we,
With all our hearts we praise His holy name.
Christ is the Lord! Then ever, ever praise we,

His power and glory ever more proclaim!
His power and glory ever more proclaim!

Overall Meaning

In this beloved Christmas carol, "O Holy Night", the opening verse describes the calm and tranquil night when Jesus Christ, the savior of the world, was born. The world was in sin and error, full of despair and hopelessness, until the arrival of the savior brought new life and joy to everyone's hearts. The next verse describes the wise men from the east who followed the shining star to the humble birthplace of Jesus, where they found the King of kings lying in a manger, a symbol of his humility and compassion for all humanity. In this verse, we also see a message of hope for those who have trials and weaknesses because Jesus is our friend and knows our needs, and we are encouraged to bow down before Him and seek His guidance and forgiveness.

The final verse speaks of the message of love and peace that Jesus brought to the world, and how he came to break the chains of oppression and bring freedom to all humanity. He is called the "King of kings" and we are encouraged to praise Him forevermore, for His power and glory will always reign supreme. This final verse is a powerful reminder of the true meaning of Christmas, which is the celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ, the one who came to bring light and hope to a dark and troubled world.
