Dream On
Orphan Songs Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Bob used to be a dreamer,
He could really dream away
And his mind was like a theatre,
Where his friends would come to play

And there were dragons there, of course
And a million dollar horse
And a girl with pretty hair
And an endless flower bed,
Where they'd lay in each other's arms
And read Arabian nights
Dream on

There's a question in the sceener
Saying what is on your mind
And have you ever been a dreamer
And if so what are you now?
But he kept saying
I don't know,
It was many years ago
Since I opened up the door
To the place I loved the most
Where I'd lay in her arms
And read Arabian nights
Dream on

Come on and breathe
You know you need
Something, someone
To help you out

And though you plead
Reality has got you stuck
Between its teeth

Come on and breathe
You know you need
Something, someone
To help you get out of here

Come on and breathe
Come on
But the door has been shut
It's shut

And so you dream of a dream gone

In the Arabian, in the Arabian night
Dream on

Overall Meaning

In this song, Orphan Songs talks about Bob who used to be a dreamer and could easily drift off into his own world. His mind was like a theatre, where his friends would come to play. There were dragons, a million dollar horse, a girl with pretty hair, and an endless flower bed in his dreams where they would lay in each other's arms and read Arabian nights. However, the lyrics suggest that Bob has grown older and stopped dreaming as life's realities have caught up with him. He cannot answer the question of whether he is still a dreamer, as it has been many years since he opened up the door to the place he loved the most, where he could read Arabian nights and lay in her arms.

The chorus of the song urges Bob to breathe and find someone or something to help him out. However, reality has gripped him, and he feels stuck between its teeth. Despite this, the song ends by encouraging Bob to dream on, even if the door to his favorite place has been shut. The Arabian nights and dreams that he used to have continue to inspire him, and he can dream on about them.
