Bright Idea
Orson Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Did somebody tell you what I couldn't tell you
I hope they did
I hope they didn't

Well I oughta regret it
Or should I forget it
Whatever this is
It feels electric

You shot me a sweet look
Gave me your yearbook
Told me to sign it
It was a signal

But I couldn't find the words
I just couldn't find the nerve
As usual

Here's my bright idea
I'll just disappear
I'll just fly away from here
(Hey!)

And now you're in Hollywood
Right in my neighborhood
Things are really looking up for you
An army of managers
And lots of pretty boys lining up
To read for you

Oh, I'm pretty sure that it was you
That I bumped into just the other day
At the record store
But I still don't have a clue
I just couldn't talk to you

As usual

Here's my bright idea
Mmmm
I'll just disappear
Woah
Here's my bright idea
Bamb bamb bamb bamb
I'll just disappear
I'll just fly away from here

So I come to your event
In my well rehearsed mystique
I show up an hour late
But I've been ready for a week
And you float into the hallway
like some neon silohuette
I'm slowly losing oxygen
and my hands are soaking wet
all the cameras and reporters
piling up on one another
just to get a look at you
they all want an interview

Then I make my move
push them out of my way
but I still just don't know what to say

Here's my bright idea
Mmmmm
I'll just disappear
Woah
Here's my bright idea
Bamb bamb bamb bamb
I'll just disappear
I'll just fly away from here

Here's my bright idea
Here's my bright idea
Here's my bright
Here's my bright

Here's my bright idea
Woah

Overall Meaning

In "Bright Idea," the lyrics reveal the singer’s longing for someone who he can't quite get a hold of. The first half of the song is reflective, as the singer wonders if the person he’s interested in has found out about his feelings. He sings of feelings of electricity and of having missed signals with his romantic interest in the past. In the second half of the song, the singer finds himself at his crush's event, with many cameras and reporters scrambling for interviews. He, too, wants to speak with this person, but is too nervous and just ends up disappearing, flying away from the situation.

The song seems to speak to the fear of rejection and the desire to escape that rejection before it can take place. The singer doesn't want to risk losing his dream girl, so he moves away from the situation entirely. However, this could also be seen as a lack of bravery, an unwillingness to face potential challenges head-on, and ultimately an unfulfilling path.

@Werten25

Going to be honest, I forgot about this song for over a decade until I came across it by chance. Glad I did.

@WedgePee

I heard this on Now 64 just after my seventh birthday. Summer 2006 was probably the best time of my life. The sun was shining, it was hot and it didn’t rain a bit. Unlike 2007 (Umbrella, eh, eh?).

The 2020s make me want to disappear.

@Werten25

Yes, 2006 was when the UK suffered a heatwave. Despite only being 6 at the time, I breifly remember it.
