Their self-financed debut album Bright Idea, released by Mercury Records in 2006, was produced in Los Angeles by Noah Shain and went on to find chart success in the UK with their first single, No Tomorrow, and album reaching the number 1 slot in their respective categories. The band finally gained recognition in their home country during the Concert for Diana in July 2007.

Northern Girl
Orson Lyrics

brighter than the California sun
I say girl are you all right?
you know I can't believe
the way you shine tonight
A northern treasure
measure for measure
and I don't know whether
but she pays the rent
Everyone she knows
is always telling her
that she could do better
but she don't really mind
'cause we have a good time
when we're together
maybe there is something
in the water
or blame it on the weather
but we're doing fine
just me and my northern girl
There I go
Mr rock and roll
living on the dole
running with the boys -
we'll raise some hell tonight
come on and make some noise !
when we're together
I'm under pressure
we're from different worlds -
me and my northern girl
Everyone she knows
is always telling her
that she could do better
but she don't really mind
'cause we have a good time
when we're together
maybe there is something
in the water
or blame it on the weather
but we're doing fine
just me and my northern girl
She's my northern girl
and we're doing fine
Yeah
The Orson song "Northern Girl" describes a bright and shining girl from the North who captures the attention and affection of the singer. The first verse sets up the scene, with the singer marveling at her radiance and asking if she's all right. He can't believe how much she shines, and describes her as a "northern treasure." The second verse touches on the opinions of those around her, who believe she could do better but she doesn't seem to mind. The bridge sees the focus shift to the singer himself - he identifies himself as "Mr. rock and roll" and acknowledges that he and his northern girl are from different worlds, but they have a good time together. The song ends with a repetition of the chorus, with the singer affirming that he and his northern girl are doing just fine.
