Adeus Maria Fulo
Os Mutantes Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Adeus, vou me embora meu bem
Chorar não ajuda ninguém
Enxugue seu pranto de dor
Que a seca mal começou

Adeus, vou me embora meu bem
Chorar não ajuda ninguém
Enxugue seu pranto de dor
Que a seca mal começou

Adeus, vou me embora Maria
Fulô do meu coração
Eu voltarei qualquer dia
E só chover no sertão

E os dias da minha volta
Eu conto na minha mão
Adeus Maria Fulô
Marmeleiro amarelou
Adeus Maria Fulô
Olho d'água estorricou

Adeus, vou me embora meu bem
Chorar não ajuda ninguém
Enxugue seu pranto de dor
Que a seca mal começou

Que a seca mal começou

Que a seca mal começou
Que a seca mal começou

Overall Meaning

The song "Adeus Maria Fulo" by Os Mutantes tells the story of a man who must say farewell to his beloved Maria Fulô due to the onset of the dry season in the sertão (the Brazilian desert-like region). The man tries to comfort Maria by telling her that crying will not help anyone, and that she should not mourn the beginning of the drought because it has only just begun. The man promises to return when the rain comes back, but he warns Maria that this may take some time. He counts the days until his return on his fingers.

The second part of the song talks about the devastating impact of the drought on the landscape of the sertão. The marmeleiro (quince) trees have turned yellow and the olho d'água (waterhole) has dried up. This is a poignant reminder of the harsh reality of life in a region where the cycle of drought and rain is an ever-present threat. The repetition of the phrase "Que a seca mal começou" (the drought has only just begun) at the end of the song reinforces this theme of struggle and uncertainty.
