Virginia
Os Mutantes Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Go away and close the door, please
I feel cold, aham
Go away but leave the sun in
I feel cold
For tonight there'll be no one to warm my room
So I'll try to keep the heat with memories

Go away and close the door, please
I feel cold, aham
Go away but leave the sun in
I feel cold
For tonight there'll be no one to warm my room
So I'll try to keep the heat with memories

I remember January
When the sky was grey and cloudy
But Virginia was beside me
And the sun was all around

But if you please, Mr.Sun
Don't you take away my Virginia
Mr.Sun
Don't take away my Virginia
Mr.Sun
Don't take away my Virginia

I remember January
When the sky was grey and cloudy
But Virginia was beside me
And the sun was all around

But if you please, Mr.Sun
Don't you take away my Virginia
Mr.Sun
Don't take away my Virginia
Mr.Sun
Don't take away my Virginia

Mr.Sun
Don't take away my Virginia
Mr.Sun
Don't take away my Virginia

Mr.Sun
Don't take away my Virginia

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "Virginia" by Os Mutantes is a melancholic ballad about longing for a lost love. The singer is alone and cold, asking the person at the door to leave but to leave the sun in. The warmth and light of the sun are contrasted with the emptiness of the singer's room. The song then describes a memory of a time when the singer was with Virginia, and the sun was all around. The lyrics express the sadness of the singer's current situation, and the longing for the past.

The song's title is the only explicit reference to Virginia, which has led to speculation about whether this is a real person or merely a symbol. Some interpret it as a metaphor for a lost state of mind, innocence or happiness. The song's melody is simple, and its structure is repetitive, emphasizing the feelings of loneliness and monotony. The use of the word "Mr. Sun" personifies the sun, creating a sense of pleading.

Overall, the song paints a picture of someone who is struggling to deal with the loss of a loved one. The lyrics express a desire to hold onto the past, even though it is no longer possible. The song highlights the beauty and comfort that can be found in memories but also touches on the sadness and longing that comes with them.

Vá embora e feche a porta,
Tenho frio
Vá embora antes que eu chore,
Tenho frio
Vou trancar-me para nunca mais abrir
Pro sabor dos nossos sonhos não fugir
Ainda lembro de janeiro
Quando o sol me deu você
Meu presente de ano novo
Que agora o frio levou
Mas por favor, senhor sol,
Me dê de volta Virgínia
Senhor sol
