Tom e Jerry

Capitalismo e comunismo são disfarces do fascismo
Violência e miséria são detalhes dos países
Nacionalismo e direitismo são as armas dos burgueses
Armamentismo e imperialismo são os braços dos governos
Tom e Jerry
Tom e Jerry
Moralismo e censura são as facas do inimigo
Anarquia é utopia faça uma todo dia
Ocidente e oriente são apenas mecanismos
Consumismo e egoísmo são as drogas do sistema
Tom e Jerry
Tom e Jerry
Bomba atômica e corrente servem para a mesma coisa
Bomba atômica e porrete servem para a mesma coisa

Seja punk mas não seja burro
Seja punk mas não seja burro

Overall Meaning

The song "Tom e Jerry" by Os Replicantes is a political commentary on the flaws of political ideologies and systems, as seen through the lens of everyday life. The lyrics touch upon themes of capitalism, communism, fascism, violence, poverty, nationalism, militarism, imperialism, moralism, censorship, anarchy, consumerism, and selfishness. The overarching message is that these systems and ideologies are manipulated and perpetuated by those in power, and that the everyday person must strive to see through these facades, and not blindly follow any one ideology.

The song starts off by equating capitalism and communism to fascism, highlighting the similarities in these seemingly polar opposite systems. The violence and poverty present in countries are brushed off as mere "details", implying that these issues are not given enough attention. The mention of nationalism and right-wing politics being the tools of the bourgeoisie, shows how these individuals manipulate the masses to maintain their power. The lines "Armamentismo e imperialismo são os braços dos governos" (Arms and imperialism are the government's arms) succinctly summarize the idea that governments use militarism and imperialism to maintain their dominance.

The chorus, "Tom e Jerry", is a reference to the popular cartoon of the same name. Just like Tom and Jerry's constant cat-and-mouse game, the people are fooled into believing they have a choice between different ideologies, when in reality, they are simply pawns in a larger scheme. The next set of lines talk about the pitfalls of moralism and censorship, where the enemy (in this case, those in power) use these tools to control and manipulate the population. Anarchy is presented as a utopian ideal, something that one must strive towards every day.

The final set of lines blame the system for the prevalence of consumerism and selfishness. The comparisons of the atomic bomb and a baton and the line "Seja punk mas não seja burro" (Be punk, but don't be stupid) encourage individual thought and action, but warn against blindly following any one ideology.
