Led by Sonny Osborne (October 29, 1937 – October 24, 2021) and his brother Bobby Osborne (born December 7, 1931), the band is remembered for their 1967 US #33 country hit song, "Rocky Top", written by Felice and Boudleaux Bryant and named after a Tennessee location.

One of the most innovative and popular bluegrass groups of the 1960s and 1970s, the band took their music into new directions and gained a large audience. Among their most notable achievements were their pioneering, inventive use of amplification, twin harmony banjos, double-tracked vocals, steel guitars, and drums. They were the first bluegrass group to expand the genre's sonic palette in such a fashion.

In 2005 Sonny Osborne retired, owing to a shoulder injury, and Bobby continued to tour as Bobby Osborne and the Rocky Top X-press.

In addition to "Rocky Top," the brothers' hit records include "Making Plans," "Up This Hill and Down," "Midnight Flyer," "Take Me Home, Country Roads," "Muddy Bottom," "Tennessee Houndog," "Georgia Pineywoods," "Roll Muddy River," "The Kind of Woman I Got," and "Ruby (Are You Mad At Your Man)."

My mother's favorite song. We used to wait for the Grand Ole Opry back in the late 40s hoping that Bill Monroe and the Bluegrass Boys would sing it. It was their big hit at the time. We lived in Mississippi and even though WSM was a clear channel station we would have static on the radio, especially in the summertime. But getting your music then was so different then than now. You would wait just to hear your favorite once. Today you have youtube and can play something over and over to your heart's content and with so much better quality sound!

My first cousin and Nashville A-Team fiddler Buddy Spicher played double stop harmony to another fiddle's lead in thousands of sessions. The sweetness and clarity of the fiddle work here sounds like him and Tommy Jackson. Buddy loved Tommy and loved to play harmony to his lead, as he has told me more than once. Anybody know who the fiddlers are? (I will ask Buddy.)This is about as good a realization of Kentucky Waltz as I've ever heard. Mr. Bill Monroe at full genius. Kudos for treemarks.

I can cry with this. My life is gone in siment, vsjo harosi. No yuou hate me because masters tell to hate. I am just kind idiot to; I will fight back if it's needed, but that I ask to my self why? For money, for glory, for so called survive; now a days I have a count, and 123 is nothing. I have killed, and in same time I killed my self. Still I am beleaving I was doing all that for right thing.
