Cursa la primaria en su ciudad natal y en Ibagué hace parte del bachillerato. Su formación artística se efectúa en Pereira y Medellín, aunque es Girardot la ciudad que lo ve debutar con el vals Hojas de Calendario. Allí forma el trío con Ibarra y Medina, y desde 1953 empieza a grabar sus propios discos. Perú, Chile, Paraguay, Uruguay y Argentina fueron algunos de los países en donde reside de 1957 a 1960, años en los que posiciona sus éxitos, para luego darse a conocer en Centroamérica. Ídolo de la canción sureña, el tango ocupó una parte importante de su repertorio. Con once producciones en su carrera musical continúa trabajando. Actualmente vive en Bogotá.
