Lopez moved to Canada in 1979 and settled in Calgary, Alberta. He began pursuing music as a career, becoming a popular draw on the Canadian folk festival circuit, and released his debut album, Hola, in 1989. Several of his albums have been nominated for Canada's Juno Awards, and 2000's Armando's Fire was his first Juno win, for Best Instrumental Album. He has recorded on the Narada label.
Although he has continued recording, Lopez has not toured or performed in several years due to a battle with depression. As a result, Spirit of the West recorded a tribute song to Lopez, "Come Back Oscar", on their 2004 album Star Trails. On July 24, Lopez appeared on stage with Spirit of the West at the Calgary Folk Music Festival to perform the song.

Happy Christmas
Oscar Lopez Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Another year over, a new one just begun.
And so this is Christmas, I hope you have fun,
The near and the dear ones, the old and the young.
A very merry Christmas and a happy New Year
Let's hope it's a good one without any fears.
And so this is Christmas for weak and for strong,
The rich and the poor ones, the road is so long.
And so happy Christmas for black and for white
For the yellow and red ones let's stop all the fights.
A very merry Christmas and a happy New Year
Let's hope it's a good one without any fear.
And so this is Christmas and what have we done
Another year over, a new one just begun.
And so happy Christmas we hope you have fun
The near and the dear ones, the old and the young.
A very merry Christmas and a happy New Year
Let's hope it's a good one without any fear.
War is over if you want it, war is over now.
The lyrics to Oscar Lopez's "Happy Christmas" are about reflecting on the past year and hoping for peace and happiness in the upcoming year. The song begins with a question - "So this is Christmas and what have you done?" - which encourages listeners to evaluate their personal growth and accomplishments over the past year. The repetition of "another year over, a new one just begun" emphasizes the cyclical nature of time and the constant opportunity for change and growth.
The song progresses to express a wish for happiness and fun for everyone, regardless of age or social status. The line "The rich and the poor ones, the road is so long" acknowledges the difficulties faced by people from all walks of life, and the desire for a peaceful future is emphasized in the line "let's stop all the fights." The idea that war is over if we want it encourages listeners to work towards a more peaceful world, and these words leave us with a feeling that the power for change lies within our own hands.
Overall, "Happy Christmas" is a poignant reflection on the past year and an encouraging call for peace and unity in the future.
