Read Full Bio ↴Oscar Peterson (1925-2007) was a Canadian jazz pianist and composer.
Born in Montreal, Canada, Peterson began learning trumpet and piano from his father at the age of five, but by the age of seven, after a bout of tuberculosis, he concentrated on the piano. Some of the artists who influenced Peterson during the early years were Teddy Wilson, Nat "King" Cole, James P. Johnson, and the legendary Art Tatum, to whom many have tried to compare Peterson in later years. In fact, one of his first exposures to the musical talents of Art Tatum came early in his teen years when his father played an Art Tatum record to him and Peterson was so intimidated by what he heard that he didn't touch the piano for over a week.
He soon developed a reputation as a technically brilliant and melodically inventive jazz pianist, and became a regular on Canadian radio. His United States introduction was at Carnegie Hall, New York City in 1949 by Norman Granz; owing to union restrictions his appearance could not be billed.
Some of his musical associates have included Lester Young, Ray Brown, Ben Webster, Herb Ellis, Ed Thigpen, Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen, Louis Armstrong, Stéphane Grappelli, Ella Fitzgerald, Clark Terry, Joe Pass, Count Basie, and Stan Getz. An important step in his career was joining impresario Norman Granz's labels (especially Verve records) and Granz's Jazz at the Philharmonic package, with which he was able to play with the major jazz artists of the time. Granz was also his manager for most of Peterson's career. Some cognoscenti assert that Peterson's best recordings were made for the MPS label in the late 'sixties and early 'seventies. For some years subsequently he recorded for Granz's Pablo Records after the label was founded in 1973 and in more recent years for the Telarc label.
In 1993, Peterson suffered a serious stroke that weakened his left side and sidelined him for two years. However he overcame this setback and went back to touring, recording, and composing on a limited basis. In 1997 he received a Grammy for Lifetime Achievement and an International Jazz Hall of Fame Award. He died on December 24th, 2007 of kidney failure.
The Man I Love
Oscar Peterson Lyrics

Simply because you're near me.
Funny, but when you're near me
I'm in the mood for love.
Heaven is in your eyes
Bright as the stars we're under
Oh! Is it any wonder
Why stop to think of whether
This little dream might fade?
We've put our hearts together
Now we are one, I'm not afraid!
If there's a cloud above
If it should rain we'll let it
But for tonight, forget it!
I'm in the mood for love
The lyrics of Oscar Peterson's The Man I Love tell the story of a woman who is waiting for the man of her dreams to come into her life. She describes the qualities that she wants in a man — someone who is big and strong — and expresses her determination to make him stay when he finally comes.
As she waits for her dream man, the woman daydreams about what it will be like when they finally meet. She imagines that he will look at her and smile, and that they will understand each other completely without having to say a word. She also fantasizes about the home that they will build together — a cozy little space just for the two of them where they will be happy forever.
The lyrics of The Man I Love are poignant and heartfelt, expressing the desire for love and the hope that it will one day come. The music of the song, with its gentle and soothing melody, perfectly captures the sweet sadness of waiting for love to arrive.

And when he comes my way
When he finally arrives in my life
I'll do my best to make him stay
I'll try my hardest to keep him with me once I find him
He'll look at me and smile
He will make me feel admired just with a smile
I'll understand
I'll know exactly what he's thinking and feeling
And in a little while
After a short amount of time
He'll take my hand
He'll show affection towards me by holding my hand
And though it seems absurd
Although it might sound strange
I know we both won't say a word
We won't need to say anything because we'll understand each other completely
Maybe I shall meet him Sunday
It's possible that we'll meet on a Sunday
Maybe Monday, maybe not
We might meet on a Monday, but we might not
Still I'm sure to meet him one day
Regardless of when or where, I know we'll meet eventually
Maybe Tuesday will be my good news day

He'll build a little home
He will create a safe and loving environment for us
Just meant for two
It will be a place where only the two of us belong
From which I'll never roam
I'll never want to leave that home or him
Who would, would you?
I doubt anyone would want to leave such a loving home and relationship, would you?
And so, all else above,
More than anything else,
I'm waiting for the man I love
I'll keep waiting patiently for the man I truly love
