Lover
Oscar Peterson / Ray Brown / Ed Thigpen Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

The sky was blue
And high above
The moon was new
And so was love
This eager heart of mine was singing
Lover where can you be
You came at last
Love had its day
That day is past
You've gone away
This aching heart of mine is singing
Lover come back to me

When I remember every little thing
You used to do
I'm so lonely
Every road I walk along
I walk along with you
No wonder I am lonely
The sky is blue
The night is cold
The moon is new
But love is old
And while I'm waiting here
This heart of mine is singing
Lover come back to me

When I remember every little thing
You used to do
I grow lonely
Every road I walk along
I walk along with you
No wonder I am lonely
The sky is blue
The night is cold
The moon is new
But love is old
And while I'm waiting here

This heart of mine is singing
Lover come back to me

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Oscar Peterson's song "Lover Come Back to Me" evoke an image of a lonely heart yearning for the return of a lost love. The opening lines set the serene and idyllic scene of blue skies and a new moon, in which our protagonist is eager to find their lover. The song progresses with a shift in tone as they revisit memories of the love they shared, and the joy that came with it. Yet, they are now left alone, walking lonely roads with only memories of their love to accompany them. The lovers have parted ways, and our singer's heart is now aching for the return of their lost love.

The continued reference to blue skies, a new moon, and an old love, creates a sense of timelessness that contrasts with the raw emotion of the lyrics. The singer seems to be stuck and unable to move on, with love remaining steadfast and true, unlike the fleeting moon phases. Peterson showcases immense skill in his interpretation of the song, marrying the melody with the intense yet melancholic lyrics of the song. Overall, "Lover Come Back to Me" is an emotional and captivating song that captures the audience with its evocative and insightful lyrics.

As a Canadian I am upset that I was never taught about Oscar Peterson in the public school system. He should be a household name in this country as one of the greatest Canadian artists to have ever lived

@JoeLinux2000

He is unquestionably one of the greatest pianists of all time. His only rival is Fredric Chopin. who lived from 1810 -1849.

@grahamlyons8522

One of the few greatest pianists and creative musicians the world has ever seen or heard. It is a SCANDAL that he is not celebrated in the country of his birth.
It makes me so angry.

@eriksnip1243

For all you Canadians out there, Oscar was loved the world over! I hope this recognition will come in Canada!! I love him and miss him RIP Oscar. Erik the Netherlands

@nickvledder

Oh, definitely! His playing is still of a big, positive influence on many people, liking jazz or not that doesn't matter 🙂.

@nozecone

He has certainly been celebrated in Canada, as much as you can expect anyone who is not a pop star or pro athlete to be celebrated. Anyone who knew anything about jazz in Canada knew who Oscar Peterson was.

Oscar! Ed! Ray! So tightly coordinated, so intimate, such chemistry between all of them. This is brilliant.

Peterson was unique. A natural talent. Proof is, 60 years of performing at the highest level. There wont be another.
