Oscar Peterson & Singers Unlimited Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Funny, but here's that rainy day
Here's that rainy day they told me about
And I laughed at the thought that it might turn out this way
Where is that worn out wish that I threw aside
After it brought my lover near
It's funny how love becomes a cold rainy day
Funny how love becomes a cold rainy day
Funny, that rainy day is here
The song "Here's that Rainy Day" by Oscar Peterson and Singers Unlimited discusses the change of fortune and how love can sometimes be fickle. The lyrics begin with the singer questioning whether they should have saved their leftover dreams, possibly regretting wasting opportunities in the past. They then acknowledge the irony of the rainy day they were warned about now coming to fruition.
The second verse touches on the idea of throwing aside a worn-out wish once it had already served its purpose of bringing the singer's lover near. This could be interpreted as the singer taking love for granted and not appreciating it until it becomes "a cold rainy day." The repetition of "funny" throughout the song could be seen as the singer's way of trying to make light of the situation, despite feeling regret and sadness.
Overall, "Here's that Rainy Day" is a melancholic yet reflective song about the unpredictable nature of love and how it can turn on a dime. The lyrics suggest that we should appreciate love when we have it, as it may not always be there when we need it.

Great rendition of a great song. Love to see a posting of the Lou Rawls version of this classic tune. Never heard it sung better. He delivers it low slow mellow and smoky with a few wry talky twists here and there that really make you feel the ache of lost love.
