Farol
Osvaldo Pugliese - Roberto Chanel Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Que reflejan su dolor de lata
Un arrabal humano
Con leyendas que se cantan como tangos
Y allá un reloj que lejos da
Las dos de la mañana
Un arrabal obrero
Una esquina de recuerdos y un farol
Farol
Tu luz
Con olor a cigarillo
Fue perdiendo luz y brillo
Y es una cruz
The song "Farol" by Osvaldo Pugliese and Roberto Chanel is a poignant tribute to the nostalgia and heartbreak that pervades the cities and towns on the outskirts of Argentina. The lyrics present a vivid picture of one such suburb, with its dilapidated houses and a clock that strikes two in the morning. This is an "arrabal", a working-class neighborhood where people sing legends like tango songs. The "farol" or streetlamp is an important image in the song, symbolizing the hope and light that once shone in the area. However, now it has lost its shine and brightness, and its light has a distinct smell of cigarette smoke. The singer of the song is saddened by this transformation of the farol and what it represents, lamenting the loss of the past.
The lyrics of Farol can be read as a metaphor for the decline of the working-class neighborhoods in Argentina that became a symbol of the country's social and economic issues. It is a story of displacement, loss, and the struggle to hold onto something that is slowly slipping away. The haunting melody and melancholic tone add to the song's emotional depth and resonance.
