Oh no. no. let me go.
[hah hehe]
No. god no!
Shut up!
Shhhhhh. it's okay, it's okay.
This is our, dirty, little, secret.
We're all alone in the city
My hands are stoned with pity
I could get by or get high with fifty [yeah]
And I don't feel pretty ... today.
And there's a lady in a stable
Her daddy reads her fables
About the moon & his bride
He's in her room every night
& feeds upon a table
Of silken robes
An altar of stone
But the child is unable
To run, run, run
& flee his tower of babel
So blood, blood, blood
Slithers down her ankles ...
We're all alone in the city
My hands are stoned with pity
I could get by or get high with fifty [yeah]
And I don't feel pretty ... today.
Come one
Come all
Witness the fall!
Cry to the sky!
Today we break away!
Uprising!
Uprising!
Uprising!
In the house of secrets!
What happens here, stays here
Say nothing, disappear!
Uprising!
Uprising!
Locked away
In the chamber of the hysterics
Here, in the house ... of secrets.
We're all alone
& I will tell you of loneliness.
[shhhh.]
The song "House of Secrets" by Otep revolves around the idea of secrets, loneliness, and escape. The first few lines of the song appear to be a dialogue between two individuals in which one of them wants to leave, but the other one seems to be stopping them. The rest of the song is composed of two main themes; the first one is about the different secrets that people keep behind closed doors, and the second one is about wanting to escape from those secrets.
In the first verse, the singer talks about being alone in the city and how they could either get by or get high with fifty (dollars). The singer sounds downtrodden and self-aware of their own perceived flaws. The second verse introduces a lady locked in a stable, whose father reads her fables. It seems like she is being kept there against her will, and the father is taking advantage of her situation. The singer describes the lady's room as having an altar of stone and being unable to escape her own tower of babel. Blood then slithers down her ankles, indicating that she has been hurt or harmed.
The chorus serves to unite the different characters in the song and present a vision of overthrowing the status quo. It declares an "uprising" and implies that the house of secrets is where the opposition is being held in. The bridge of the song again emphasizes the idea of secrecy, and the listener is cautioned not to say anything and disappear. The song ends with the singer describing loneliness and how they will tell the listener about it, but with a finger to their lips, urging them to keep it quiet as if it's yet another secret.
