Kunek was a genre smoothie. Toss some indie, folk, post-rock, and ambient in a blender and set to awesome. In August 2008, Kunek announced via their Myspace that Kunek will live on only through their fantastic but lone album, Flight of the Flynns. Five members of Kunek have transferred to a new band under the Other Lives moniker. The debut album from the Stillwater, Oklahoma band is finished as of August 2008, produced by Joey Waronker (Beck, REM) and will be released via TBD records (Radiohead, Underworld). Their sophomore album, Tamer Animals, was released in May 2011 on TBD records.
The 5 members of Other Lives/Kunek are as follows:
Colby Owens Drums
Josh Onstott: Bass, Organ
Jonathan Mooney: Keyboards (Acoustic Guitar),
Jenny Hsu: Cello,
Jesse Tabish: Lead Vocals (Piano, Guitar)
As I Lay My Head Down
Other Lives Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
upon that grassy field
winter’s passing
soon will fall.
no one will ever know.
the end.
the end.
the end is all we need.
As I lay my head down
upon that grassy field
you won’t find me
I’ll be gone.
No one will ever know.
oh, look at the years going by
no, troubles come into your life
oh, now that you finally have found the end
The end.
The end is all we need.
The lyrics of "As I Lay My Head Down" by Other Lives appear to be a reflection on death and the end of life. The opening lines describe the singer laying down in a grassy field, perhaps indicating a peaceful, natural environment in which they will ultimately meet their end. The mention of winter passing and soon falling may represent the passing of time and the inevitable approach of death. The repeated line "the end is all we need" suggests that the singer seeks an end to their struggles and sorrows and may welcome death as a release from them.
The second verse continues along a similar theme, with the singer suggesting that their absence after death will not be noticed by anyone. This may speak to feelings of insignificance in life or a desire for a peaceful departure without causing pain or suffering to loved ones. The third verse seems to be a reflection on the nature of life, with the passing of years and the occurrence of troubles bringing a greater appreciation for the end of life.
Overall, the lyrics of "As I Lay My Head Down" are open to interpretation, but seem to evoke feelings of acceptance and perhaps even embrace of death as a natural part of life.

@StarvingSound, actually @kittenfetus666 is correct. Radiohead's "In Rainbows" was released in the U.S. on TBD Records, the same label as Other Lives' most recent album. Thom went to one of their shows, loved it, and invited them to open for Radiohead. True story!

The lead singer is so cool. I met him after they played their set at Cafe Du Nord. They opened for S. Carey, and during the headliner he was just hanging out, and super cordial. Oh, and they rock.

The time signature is beautiful. The theme is in 23/8: one group of 5/8, then 3 groups of 6/8. Then groups of 3/8 occasionally added to 6/8. At 1:00, at "Winter's passing," there are three groups of 6/8, followed by a group of 9/8. Then, at 1:11, when he sings, "No one will ever know," it's back to 23/8 (one group of 5/8, then 3 groups of 6/8). Same thing at 2:21, at "No one will ever know," it's another 23/8 (one group of 5/8, then 3 groups of 6/8). Then it's 6/8 while she plays castinets.
