Kunek was a genre smoothie. Toss some indie, folk, post-rock, and ambient in a blender and set to awesome. In August 2008, Kunek announced via their Myspace that Kunek will live on only through their fantastic but lone album, Flight of the Flynns. Five members of Kunek have transferred to a new band under the Other Lives moniker. The debut album from the Stillwater, Oklahoma band is finished as of August 2008, produced by Joey Waronker (Beck, REM) and will be released via TBD records (Radiohead, Underworld). Their sophomore album, Tamer Animals, was released in May 2011 on TBD records.
The 5 members of Other Lives/Kunek are as follows:
Colby Owens Drums
Josh Onstott: Bass, Organ
Jonathan Mooney: Keyboards (Acoustic Guitar),
Jenny Hsu: Cello,
Jesse Tabish: Lead Vocals (Piano, Guitar)
End of the Year
Other Lives Lyrics

It's the end of the year
But it's not too late
It's the end of the year
It's the end of the year
But it's not too late
It's the end of the year
It's the end of the year
To start again
I've got sunshine
I've got laughter
Hello blue skies
There and afterward
You've got lucky
This disaster
And there you stay now
Here and afterward
This passing sleep
Won't bother me
I'm gone
This time of year
Won't bring us tears
I've gone too far
And there you are
On the western front
Daylight's in front of you
Your heart caves in
And there you go
Off on your own
December's gone
At its surface, the lyrics to Other Lives' song "End of the Year" seem to be about the transition from one year to another. However, through careful analysis, the lyrics reveal themselves to be about the cycle of life and the idea that it's never too late to start anew. The repetition of "it's the end of the year" serves as a reminder that time is passing, and the singer acknowledges that they "gotten lucky" to have survived any disasters that may have occurred in the past year. The lines "this passing sleep won't bother me / I'm gone" could be interpreted as a symbol of leaving old habits behind, and the utilization of "sunshine" and "blue skies" as metaphors for new beginnings reinforces this idea.
The chorus further emphasizes the importance of taking advantage of new opportunities. The phrase "it's not too late to start again" reflects the belief that regardless of past mistakes or missteps, there is always room for growth and progress. The last lines of the song, "December's gone," can be seen as a metaphor for moving forward and letting go of any lingering regrets or negative emotions. Ultimately, "End of the Year" is a reminder that the end of one chapter does not signify the end of one's journey, and that there is always potential for growth and change.

This Album has been THE surprise HIT of the year for me (although it came out in 2009)> Seeing them Live at the Paradise/Boston this Fall proved their simple brilliance is better experienced in person...
