Day Tripper
Otis Redding Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

She was a day tripper girl, now
She give me a one-way ticket there, y'all
It took me so, so very long, huh
I found out, I found out
I found out, I found out, children yeah

Took me out, yes she did
And then she teased me a little bit
She told me she would love me
Teased me a little bit, y'all, huh, yeah
But I'll take the easy way out, girl, huh
I said I got a good reason now, huh
I'm gonna take the easy way out, huh

She was a day tripper girl, now
She give me a one-way ticket there, y'all
It was so, so very long, baby, ha
I found out, I found out
Yes I did, ha

Listen to me, let me tell you about her
She give me a hard time
Everything about that girl
Is good reason, children
I'm gonna take the easy way out, y'all, huh
I said I got a good reason, girl, yeah, huh
I'm gonna take the easy way out, now

She was a day tripper girl, now, ha
I got a one-way ticket there girl
It took me so, so very long, y'all, huh
I found out, I found out
I found out, oh yeah

Day tripper girl, yeah
She give me one-way ticket there, y'all
It took me so, so very long, huh
I found out, I found out
Ouh, Ooh baby

She's a teaser, nothing but a teaser
Good teaser, nothing but a teaser now

Give me a hard time
On everything I do, y'all

Overall Meaning

The song "Day Tripper" by Otis Redding is a cover of the Beatles' original song. The lyrics describe a woman who is a day tripper, implying that she spends her time traveling and exploring new places without any long-term commitment. The chorus repeats the phrase "She was a day tripper girl, now / She give me a one-way ticket there," suggesting that the singer was once involved with this woman, but now all she does is lead him on with no intention of sticking around.

The verses describe how the woman "teased" the singer and gave him a hard time, making him feel uncertain about their relationship. Despite this, the singer expresses his intention to take the easy way out and move on, likely because he has realized that the woman is not interested in anything more serious.

The lyrics are a commentary on the trend of casual relationships and the frustration that can come with them. The singer's desire for something more substantial conflicts with the day tripper girl's desire for fleeting experiences. The repeated phrase "I found out" suggests that the singer has finally come to a realization about the nature of their relationship, and is now ready to move on.

Overall, Otis Redding's cover of "Day Tripper" adds his signature soulful sound to the Beatles' original rock song, while maintaining the themes of uncertainty and frustration in relationships.

Otis Redding often doesn't seem to quite know the songs he covered, he gets the gist of them, fires the band up, makes up what he's forgotten, the man was just magic.

MaggyRhythm

That's all he needed. Evidently. Legend.

MC Duterde

Thomas Fleming " often doesn't ever seem to quite know the songs " ??

Thomas F

@MC Duterde quoting someone isn't a question.

pontnord

That's exactly what I thought when I hear this cover lol. I'm not even sure if Otis liked the original song or not. He's completely changing it. Like "I don't need those shitty triplets" Actually, I see zero respect toward the original song.

Thomas F

@pontnord don't think it's a lack of respect at all.

dawsonscreek4eva

Normally underwhelmed by covers but Otis just goes full on. Brilliant.

Nikola Nebulus

I love the energy, that drum beat, and Otis' great voice.

dawsonscreek4eva

So much energy. The definition of dancing music.

Spencer Miller

Otis, the real king of soul.
