I have two LP:s with Otis Span - absolute top stuff. I think he passed away already at age 37 or something like that. This is blues but he also did incredible boogie woogies. Wish I could put this in better words to give him appropriate credit - English is not my native language.

Douglas Grossman

an absolute genius with a heart of gold.

Mr Spann was a flat out genius. Otis Spann was pursuing a solo career when he died and Muddy Waters was devastated on his passing

Douglas Grossman

you are so correct. i had the great fortune of friendship with him his last few years.

I've been into blues now for some years. Otis Spann, in my opinion, was the greatest blues pianist that ever put a finger to a piano key.

Certainly a great, though I'd hate to say who's the greatest, and this is a great track. For enormously emotion-charged, and apparently simple, piano solo blues, Jimmy Yancey's "How Long Blues" (the slow take without his wife singing) and "Mournful Blues" are the greatest tracks of all. I'm not saying that Yancey was as great an all round player as Spann. It's just those two tracks in particular of his get me right in the pit of the stomach every time I play them, and are up there as numbers 1 and 2. This track comes near it for me, and I'll play it often as well. Pinetop Perkins, of course, is another piano great whom I'm sure you like as well.
