Wailin'
OutKast Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

In the zone like Keyser Soze
Always the usual suspect
No check, all I got in this game is my respect
And Southern pride I be
Checking my fucking head
Scared, looking up in your face, boy, I see dead
If you test like SAT
Then I guess that we may be, enemies
In the P's freestyles be freebies
I be that wrong nigga to fuck with, wouldn't I?
Wouldn't I be the wrong one to try?
Never eating chicken thighs
Only the twenty piece mojo
Flow zone like Flo Jo
I wanted to figure out
Just how low could your ho go
The beat hit like Beat Street
Krush Groove and Breaking
Never baking, rebuking Satan
We had you waiting
For the second coming, funny how time flies when you're rhyming
LaFace records, I think they got that perfect timing
To be doper than Sadaam believe the Nation of Islam
Fuck the police and the dogs, sniffing that dope up out your car
I think they overstep they boundaries (uh)
OJ, not guilty, that's how they found he

I felt the pressure like sun shining
While raining at the same time
I kept on rhyming
Not complaining
Storm braining cats and dogs
My catalog be the size of golf balls
Throw up your Daisy Dukes
I'm hazardous to all you Boss Hoggs
And Rosco P. Col' people
Who caboose my locomotive
But enough of that everyone can rap unless their gift's upholstered
I use my gift of gab to boast and brag in every rhyme I
Compose won't y'all get sick of that, 'cause I know I do when I hear those
Flows that ain't hip-hop
You find that shit in the gift shop
But to each his own, my speech is gone
Keep that shit up outta my zone
Long as you happy then I'm happy
Even if you just hate my fucking guts, go ahead and dap me
'Cause I'm gon' dap you anyway
And then go home and pray for your ass later

'Cause we might need you in this war I'm wailing on you traitors
Like that (like that, like that)

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Outkast's song "Wailin'" contain many references to popular culture and current events of the time. The opening lines, "In the zone like Keyser Söze, always the Usual Suspect," reference the famous line from the movie "The Usual Suspects" and a character from the same movie. This suggests that the singer is always around, even if they're not easily noticed.

The next lines, "No check all I got in this game is my respect, and Southern pride I be checking my fucking head," suggest that the singer may not have a lot of money, but they respect themselves and their Southern heritage. The line "Scared, looking up in your face, boy I see dead" can be interpreted as the singer's fearlessness in the face of danger or confrontation.

The following lines reference the SATs, stating that if someone tests the singer, they may become enemies. The singer then talks about freestyling and being the wrong person to mess with. They also mention only eating chicken breast and being in the flow zone like former Olympic track star Flo Jo.

The next lines allude to the beat of the song being similar to popular hip-hop films, including "Beat Street," "Krush Groove," and "Breaking." The singer also references "rebuffing Satan" and waiting for the "Second Coming," suggesting religious undertones.

@antonioteeriles7113

People need to give Big Boi his Spect! One of my favorite verses from him. But Andre just come and RIPP SHIT !

@jodykatana9803

Big Boi primarily gets his respect from southerners in comparison to Andre. OutKast is bigger than just the south and a lot of people who aren't from this region, can barely understand what Big Boi is saying most of the time.

@mauriceross1464

He did snap
