Trying Too Hard
Over Easy Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Have been all good fun
You’re it
Everything I want
But I know it won’t last
Cause you’re a nightmare
One day You’re like my best friend
Right there
When I call your name
Just to wake up alone
Saturday morning
Oh oh oh oh oh oh oh
You’re sending me right over the line
Gave into you
And now you’re pushing while I pull
You know with everything I do
I think I’m trying too hard
Done making moves
You got me acting like a fool
Ain’t nothing left for me to prove
I think I’m trying too hard
Think I’m trying too hard
Oh yeah ee yeah eh
Too hard
Oh yeah ee yeah eh
Too hard
Oh yeah ee yeah eh
Too hard Too hard
Think I’m trying too hard
Think I’m trying too hard
Too hard
Think I’m trying too hard
Think I’m trying too hard
Some days
You’ll be coming home late
One drink
Can become like eight
And always walking away
No confrontation
Are we
Gonna play pretend
I won’t be
Your backup plan
Til we’re hating our names
With the frustration
Oh oh oh oh oh oh oh
You’re sending me right over the line
Gave into you
And now you’re pushing while I pull
You know with everything I do
I think I’m trying too hard
Done making moves
You got me acting like a fool
Ain’t nothing left for me to prove
I think I’m trying too hard
Think I’m trying too hard
The lyrics of Over Easy's song "Trying Too Hard" depict a complicated and tumultuous relationship. The song explores the singer's feelings of uncertainty and frustration as they navigate the ups and downs of their connection with someone. In the first verse, the lyrics describe how some nights are fun and enjoyable, but the singer recognizes that it won't last because the person they are involved with is a "nightmare." This implies that the relationship is ultimately unhealthy and damaging.
The second verse continues to delve into the mixed signals and confusion within the relationship. The singer describes how the person can be their best friend one day, always there for them, but then they wake up alone on a Saturday morning. This suggests a sense of inconsistency and instability in the relationship, leaving the singer feeling emotionally confused and frustrated.
The chorus emphasizes the singer's realization that they are trying too hard in the relationship. They feel like they have given in to the other person's demands, always pushing while the singer pulls. The lyrics suggest that the singer is putting in a lot of effort and energy into the relationship, but it is not reciprocated. They acknowledge that they have nothing left to prove, indicating that they have reached a point of exhaustion and emotional depletion.
The bridge of the song further highlights the unhealthy dynamics within the relationship. It mentions the other person coming home late and indulging in excessive drinking, leading to constant walking away and avoiding confrontation. The lyrics question whether they are just playing pretend and whether the singer is merely a backup plan for the other person. It hints at a growing dissatisfaction and resentment that could ultimately lead to them hating each other with frustration.
Overall, "Trying Too Hard" by Over Easy portrays the complexities and emotional rollercoaster of a troubled relationship, where the singer recognizes the imbalance and the toll it is taking on them.
