The band, originally a four-piece, started out on Negative Progression Records. After gaining a small but solid fan base, the band was picked up by Lobster Records, on which they released Timing Is Everything in 2002, and Silverstrand in 2005. Silverstrand chronicles the band's move to southern California, and is their most focused work to date. Recently, the band added former Don't Look Down front man Ryan Ogren as an extra guitar player, and released their Virgin Records debut, Step Outside Yourself in late August 2006.
Weightless
Over It Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
I would never take a chance on it if it didn't paralyze me
Completely
sure you think its all fun, but games are all I've won in this life
I wouldn't give it all up if it meant id never feel so weightless
rebuilding the puzzle I've found scattered all around
I invent myself with every breath
To take a step I look ahead
And size up anything that makes me tremble.
I can't tell if the shifting pattern exists
Before I make it, but does it matter?
You've got the time to find out for yourself.
The song Weightless by Over It talks about finding oneself by facing and overcoming the challenges that come our way. The lyrics portray the singer's experiences of feeling paralyzed by some fears that he must overcome to move on to the next phase of his life. The opening line, "Bent out of shape we make our way straight" suggests that life can get stressful and confusing, but we have to persevere to get through them successfully. The line, "I would never take a chance on it if it didn't paralyze me, completely" highlights the importance of taking risks in life, but being willing to face the consequences that come with them, no matter how intense they may be.
As the singer faces his challenges, he realizes that people might view his journey as fun and games, but for him, it's a serious task that he must undertake to achieve self-discovery. The line, "Sure, you think it's all fun, but games are all I've won in this life" implies that while others might underestimate the effort it takes to get to where one wants to be, every challenge we overcome is a significant win for ourselves, which should be taken seriously.
The chorus "I wouldn't give it all up if it meant I'd never feel so weightless" suggests that the singer finds satisfaction in overcoming challenges and wouldn't trade the experience for anything. He discovers that as he rebuilds his life's puzzles, he recreates and reinvents himself with every breath and becomes a stronger person in the process. Ultimately, the message is that facing one's fears can pave the way to self-discovery, make us stronger and more confident, and that the journey is worth it in the end.
