To date, Overkill has released nineteen studio albums, an album of cover songs, two EPs, one demo tape and three live albums. They were one of the first thrash metal bands to sign to a major label (having signed to Atlantic Records in 1986), and rose to fame as part of the genre's movement of the mid-to-late 1980s, along with the "Big Four" (Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer and Anthrax) as well as Exodus and Testament. Overkill achieved their first mainstream success with its second studio album and Atlantic debut, Taking Over (1987), which peaked at number 191 on the Billboard 200. The band's next five studio albums—Under the Influence (1988), The Years of Decay (1989), Horrorscope (1991), I Hear Black (1993) and W.F.O. (1994)—were also successful on the Billboard charts, with the latter two cracking the top ten on the Top Heatseekers chart. Following their split from Atlantic in 1995, Overkill went through some label changes, but continued to enjoy moderate underground success, particularly in Europe and Japan. The band experienced a resurgence of popularity in the U.S. during the 2010s, with three of their studio albums released that decade—The Electric Age (2012), White Devil Armory (2014) and The Grinding Wheel (2017)—reaching the top 100 on the charts. Overkill has sold over 16 million records worldwide; they are also estimated to have sold more than 625,000 records in the United States since the beginning of the SoundScan era.

'Cause you can't live, without me.
Who left the door the window gate locked?
Who did the didn't want me in?
Way back when I was just a psychopath,
C'mon c'mon c'mon and let me in!
Whoa! Just something with my brain.
I'm a good boy now, good boy now!
Certifiable.
I'm a good boy now, good boy now!
I know I know I know you're in there,
I know that murder is a sin,
I know I'm better than I ever was,
C'mon c'mon c'mon now let me in!
You know I'm the same,
You know I havn't changed.
What you done!
Just ain't right but I thought of you!
Every night,
It was a painful as a human bite, but we'll be together again.
An' I know that you've been thinkin' of me,
Cause you want it the way it used to be,
So leave the light on so I can see and you better let me in!
You better! Let me! In!
Mother fucker!
Whoa! They tell me I'm insane.
Whoa! They tell me nothing's changed.
Whoa! But you that I'm sane.
Whoa! But you know that I've, changed.
Good boy now
Good boy.
The lyrics to Overkill's song Certifiable describe a twisted love story of a man who claims he's changed and wants to be let back into the life of his former partner. The song begins with the man returning home with the belief that he's needed as his partner can't live without him. However, he soon discovers that he's not welcome, and the door and window gate are locked, leaving him outside begging to be let in. He speaks of being a psychopath and wanting to be let into the house in a rather frantic manner.
The chorus then follows where the man insists that he's a good boy now and certifiable. He still believes his partner wants him back in their life, and he won't give up until they let him in. In the second verse, the man reminisces on the past and how they used to be. He admits that murder is a sin and that he knows it's not right, but he still wants to be with his partner. He pleads to see the light left on so he can enter the house and be with his former partner again.
The song paints a picture of a disturbed individual obsessed with the idea of love and being accepted back into someone's life despite committing heinous actions. It's a cautionary story that highlights the dangers of toxic relationships and the importance of setting boundaries.
