Oh oh, I can't even take it in
Oh oh, I left my heart in Metropolis
So far apart, I check that the coast was clear,
I feel like a post card,
I wish you were here
Subway through the dark, tearing through the park
Don't matter much to me
What it is that I do
As long as I'm coming home With you
Oh oh oh, as far as I can see,
You're the only one, the only one who can get to me
Like a high jacked plane,
Or a runaway train,
Or a speeding bullet,
There's no stopping this!
I left my heart in Metropolis!
A thousand miles feels like a million years,
Like hundreds of postcards
That say I wish you were here!
Airplane through the sky, grey all racing by,
Air bike on the beach, sailboat on the sea,
Don't matter much to me
What it is that I do,
As long as I'm coming home with you
Oh oh oh, as far as I can see,
You're the only one, the only one who can get to me
Like a high jacked plane,
Or a runaway train,
Or a speeding bullet,
There's no stopping this!
I left my heart in Metropolis!
I left my heart in Metropolis!
Like a high jacked plane,
Or a runaway train,
Or a speeding bullet,
There's no stopping this!
I left my heart in Metropolis!
I left my heart in Metropolis!
I left my heart in Metropolis!
I left my heart in Metropolis!
Oh oh, I can't even take it in
Oh oh, I can't even take it in
Oh oh, I can't even take it in
Oh oh, I left my heart in Metropolis
In Owl City's song "Metropolis," the singer is torn between two worlds: his life in the city and his desire to be near the person he loves. He sings about feeling like a postcard in his home, wishing the person he loves would be there with him. His daily commute is part of his routine, as he tears through the park and drives down the busy city streets. However, his life's purpose is not what matters to him. Instead, he longs to return home to the person who holds his heart. He dreams of taking a plane, train, or sailboat to reach his love's side. The singer left his heart in Metropolis, and it is the only place where he can be with his love.
The song is a representation of the loneliness that can occur in a bustling city despite the people and the city's myriad of things to do or places to visit. While the city is bright, exciting, and bustling with energy, it can still feel empty without the person that makes the singer's life complete. The lyrics also touch on the idea that it doesn't matter what he does as long as he's coming home to his love, suggesting that life is about relationships, not material possessions or achievements.

The smile of dawn arrived early May
She carried a gift from her home
The night shed a tear to tell her of fear
And of sorrow and pain
She'll never outgrow
Death is the first dance, eternal
There's no more freedom
The both of you will beย
confined to this mind
I was told there's a miracle for each day that I try
I was told there's a new loveย
that's born for each one that has died
I was told there'd be no one to
call on when I feel alone and afraid
I was told if you dream of the next world
You'll find yourself swimming in a lake of fire
As a child, I thought I could
live without pain without sorrow
As a man I've found it's all caught up with me
I'm asleep yet I'm so afraid
Somewhere like a scene from a memory
There's a picture worth a thousand words
Eluding stares from faces before me
It hides away and will never be heard of againย
Deceit is the second without end
The city's cold blood teaches us to survive
Just keep my heart in your eyes and we'll stay alive
The third arrives
Before the leaves have fallen
Before we lock the doors
There must be the third and last dance
This one will last forever
Metropolis watches and thoughtfully smiles
She's taken you to your home
It can only take place
When the struggle betweenย
our children has ended
Now the Miracle and the
Sleeper know that the third is love
Love is the dance of eternity

@raphael delavega Great to see the song still carries the same influence years later. Feels like only yesterday I was jamming out to this in middle school. Now Iโm a whole junior in college. Time really flies
