Umbrella Beach
Owl City Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Stands and gears, oh how the daisies bloom
When chandeliers light up the engine room
Can you feel the drops as it starts to rain
There's an underwater Ferris wheel where
I found the missing link to this island chain

Home will always be here unseen, out of sight
Where I disappear and hide
I think dreamy things as I'm waving goodbye
So I'll spread out my wings and fly

Home is a boxcar and it's so far out of reach
Hidden under umbrella beach

Home will always be here, unseen, out of sight
Where I disappear and hide
I think dreamy things as I'm waving goodbye
So I'll spread out my wings and fly

I'll spread my wings and fly

Home is a boxcar and it's so far out of reach
Hidden under umbrella beach

Overall Meaning

The lyrics in Owl City's song "Umbrella Beach" are a poetic expression of the singer's longing for a place that feels like home, a place where he can disappear and hide from the world. He uses vivid imagery to describe this imaginary world: "Stands and gears," "daisies bloom," "chandeliers light up the engine room," and "an underwater Ferris wheel." All these symbols create a dreamy atmosphere that represents a safe haven for the singer.

The chorus in the song repeats the phrase "Home will always be here, unseen, out of sight, where I disappear and hide." The singer emphasizes the idea of home as an intangible concept that exists within us. Home is a feeling, a sense of belonging, rather than a physical place. The lyrics suggest that the singer finds this feeling of home through his imagination and dreams.

The last lines of the song, "Home is a boxcar and it's so far out of reach, hidden under umbrella beach," reinforce this idea of home as something that exists beyond the physical realm. The boxcar represents a distant memory or a faraway place, while the umbrella beach is a metaphor for a peaceful and sheltered place.

Overall, Owl City's "Umbrella Beach" is a beautifully crafted song that blends poetry and music to convey a message of hope and belonging. The lyrics encourage listeners to find a sense of home and belonging within themselves, even in the midst of an ever-changing and uncertain world.

The little kid is not committing suicide, he has made a boxcar with wings which will take him from one island, where he is stranded, to another island, where his mother is waiting in their home for him to return. Umbrella Beach is a surreal view of the story of The Prodigal Son. The song is all about how the boy ran away from home, then realized what he had done, and at that, went to great lengths to undo the pain he had caused his mother and thus decided to return back to his home.

'Home will always be here, unseen, out of sight'.

These are his resonating thoughts, memoirs, of home, while he is away and on the run.

I don't know, I know this comment's been recycled for a few years now, but now that I'm looking at it, it looks as if they're all on the same island; the island in the distance looks the same. So maybe the scenes of the boy were the past and his assumed parents look for him everyday in the future

@Whxyte

Green Poo I sorta feel that while there might be a conontation of the kid suiciding, i feel that its more towards the kid achieved his dreams and left the little island, and his mom is waiting for him to come home and his dad is up on the roof to see if theres anyone coming from the mainland

@lpskippy6308

And then they both die, the lady and the son, the father is in heaven, looking to see if his wife and son are okay, the son runs away because he can't deal with the pain of losing his dad, and the mom builds a boxcar to look for her son, the son builds a boxcar to look for his mom, they die, and join the dad in heaven

@richardpeach7096

+LPSkippy I know there is a lot of rumors but I don't think he commited suicide
