Air
Owls Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

The bird is here and we are off
To wherever those wings take us
The atmosphere is crawling with airlines
That wind through the clouds
And look down on the crowds
Relax your back and let the noise
Sing you to sleep in my arms
If you awake before we arrive I will carry you down
And I won't make a sound

The scent is strong as we move on
And breathe in the pristine crime scene
The false veneer is old like a substitute volunteer
From, oh, some other year
I'm just a shell as far as I can tell
So I paint my eyes a light green

The silver beams are twirling and swirling throughout your dreams
Like air traffic streams

Overall Meaning

In Owls' song "Air", the lyrics describe a sense of escape and adventure, as the singer takes flight with a bird to travel through the clouds. The opening lines convey a sense of excitement and freedom as they embark on their journey. The atmosphere is described as "crawling with airlines", which is an interesting choice of words that reminds the listener of a bustling airport or crowded airspace. The idea of looking down on the crowds below also speaks to the theme of escaping from the mundane.

The second verse then shifts the focus to the senses, as the singer takes in the scents around them. The phrase "pristine crime scene" is a powerful image that speaks to the complexities and contradictions of the world around us. The false veneer suggests a layer of artifice and pretense, while the substitute volunteer could be interpreted in various ways - perhaps as someone who is taking the place of another, or as a symbol for something that is not quite real or genuine. The singer acknowledges their own sense of detachment ("I'm just a shell as far as I can tell"), yet there is a sense of whimsy and playfulness in the description of the light green eyes.

The final lines of the song bring together the imagery of air travel and dreams, as the silver beams of light represent the streams of air traffic that twirl and swirl throughout the dream world. Overall, there is a sense of wonder and escapism in the lyrics, with a poetic and dreamy quality that invites the listener to join in the journey.

pretty cool sounding stuff. But unfortunately you should have researched if there was already a band called "The Owls." Because there IS one, and they put out the most outstanding album recorded by Steve Albini in 2001 that will be remembered for years to come as far ahead of its time.
