Back to You
Ownglow Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You say you love me when you are on
But when you off, you don't need my love
I'll have to stop going back to you
Back to you, back to you
You say you love me when you are on
But when you off, you don't need my love
I'll have to stop going back to you
Back to you, back to you

You say you love me when you are on
But when you off, you don't need my love
I'll have to stop going back to you
Back to you, back to you
You say you love me when you are on
But when you off, you don't need my love
I'll have to stop going back to you
Back to you, back to you

You say you love me when you are on
But when you off, you don't need my love
I'll have to stop going back to you
Back to you, back to you
You say you love me when you are on
But when you off, you don't need my love

I'll have to stop going back to you
Back to you, back to you

Overall Meaning

In Ownglow's song Back to You, the lyrics convey the internal struggle of a person who is in a relationship with someone who only expresses their love when they are under the influence or in a particular mood. The person singing the song laments that they have to stop going back to this person, despite the fact that they claim to love them, because they realize that they don't need their love when they are sober or feeling differently. The repetition of the lines throughout the song emphasizes the internal conflict, as the singer seems to be trying to convince themselves to let go and move on from the relationship.

The song's lyrics also suggest that the singer realizes that the situation is not healthy, as they refer to themselves as having to "stop" going back to the person. The use of the word "have" indicates that it is not an easy decision but rather a necessary one. The repetition of "Back to you" at the end of each stanza represents the singer's desire to return to the person they love, but also their acknowledgement that it is not possible or healthy to continue doing so.

Overall, Back to You paints a picture of an on-again, off-again relationship that is defined by inconsistency and a lack of stability. The lyrics convey a sense of heartbreak and loss, as the singer acknowledges that they must move on from the person they love.

"When audio issues appear, fix it and reupload the video" - ancient YouTube proverb

Ownglow was one of the first names that came to mind when we first sat down to plan the UKF10 album - since making his debut via our sublabel Pilot Records in 2014 (with Gold/Tension) he's gone from strength to strength, with multiple releases on Hospital Records and Drum&BassArena under his belt. I'm immensely proud of how far Sam has gotten in the past 5 years and I'm very much looking forward to seeing where he'll go from here. Rumour has it he'll be returning to Pilot with a brand new release in 2020...

Lies, only five years in? Seems like he's been producing fire that long at least; aren't there supposed to be some artist growing pains or something?
