Oxbow plays a blend of noise rock, avant-garde jazz, musique concrète (AMG), and blues, creating soundscapes caustic, or plangent, with overtones of paranoia, revulsion, exaltation.

The first album in 1989 combining the squall of bands like The Birthday Party with elements of free jazz and musique concrète from Oxbow, Fuckfest, met with international success and created a small but loyal following that has grown ever since.

Followed in 1992 by King of the Jews. The menacing The Balls in the Great Meat Grinder Collection also appeared in 1992, and after 1995's Steve Albini-produced Let Me Be a Woman Oxbow signed to the SST label for 1997's Serenade in Red, which featured guest vocals from Marianne Faithfull.

They released a split EP with the Italian band White Tornado in 1999, followed by An Evil Heat in 2002. The compilation Love That's Last: A Wholly Hypnographic and Disturbing Work Regarding Oxbow arrived in 2006.

Wenner has also played with God and Swell.

I would frickin love to see a video for "A Gentleman's Gentleman." Easily my favorite track on the record. It's just so visceral and dark and grooves so hard. And Eugene's performance is just straight up psychotic haha. It's a vocal performance truly unlike any other.

Bands like Oxbow show how incredibly reductive it is to classify music by genre. There's really no other band that sounds quite like them. The more music I listen to, the less interested I am in genres. Finally saw them live just over a week ago and they have a phenomenal live sound.

Dan has been playing fretless for the whole time. He was originally a (great) drummer, and used to play jazz gigs with his brother Bob. then bought a Hammond B3 and Leslie, which filled our living room, and learned to play with the foot pedals. When he picked up the fretless I thought he was crazy, but damn.

Now THIS is how you age gracefully as a rock band without losing your edge. Far too many bands/artists soften their sound in the hope of becoming 'mature' and they just get boring. Either that or they just repeat past glories, treading over the same worn ground ad infinitum/ad nauseam. or they fall into solipsism (e.g recent Mark Kozelek).

Oxbow, along with Swans, are great models for creative bands to look up to in order to gain some insight into how to do it right.

Studio recording guitar setup is split-signal into a lot of simultaneous amps: 100 watt 70's Marshall; 70's 25 watt greenback celestian speaker 4x12; 100 watt Bogner into Bogner 4x12; early 60's Silvertone 1482 open back 1x12 combo (w/ a pre-amp-out jack); 100 watt early 80's Mesa-Boogie Mark IIb 1x12 combo; a 50's U.S. army p.a. amp converted into a guitar amp; modern re-issue Marshall 4x12 cab with 30 watt celestian speakers; strat or les paul guitar is usually plugged first through an old version Radial Switchbone. All the above is constantly rewired, for each song and/or overdub, to change the sound. Live is all Boogie: the Mark IIb combo in center, and left/right are the Marshall 4x12 cabs powered by a TriAxis into a stereo 2:ninety power amp. (whew.)

And per the ever present matrix of existential dread and woe that I exist in, My first listen coincided with the dissolving of a long relationship with my girl, getting a 12 day eviction notice, and some kind of health issue i havent nailed down yet.

this albulm, as with all the others, has already come to define both the death and birth between Eras, for me. In a review, the phrase "masters of pathos" was used to describe Thin Black Duke..

Pathos infuckingdeed. How do you guys channel Ruin and Melancholy so effectively? Damnit Niko, your guitar sound fills a musical abyss never before so closely looked into, and I have stared into it. Mr Robinson, your vocal torture is ours, and we are happily blighted.
