I Don't Believe You
P!nk Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I don't mind it
I don't mind at all
It's like you're the swing set
And I'm the kid that falls
It's like the way we fight
The times I've cried
We come too close
And every night
The passion's there
So it's gotta be right
Right?

No I don't believe you
When you say don't come around here no more
I won't remind you
You said we wouldn't be apart
No I don't believe you
When you say you don't need me anymore
So don't pretend to
Not love me at all

I don't mind it
I still don't mind at all
It's like one of those bad dreams
When you can't wake up
It looks like you've given up
You've had enough
But I want more
No I won't stop
Because I just know
You'll come around
Right?

No I don't believe you
When you say don't come around here no more
I won't remind you
You said we wouldn't be apart
No I don't believe you
When you say you don't need me anymore
So don't pretend to
Not love me at all

Just don't stand there and watch me fall
'Cause I, 'cause I still don't mind at all

It's like the way we fight
The times I've cried
We come too close
And every night
The passion's there
So it's gotta be right,
Right?

No I don't believe you
When you say don't come around here no more
I won't remind you
You said we wouldn't be apart
No I don't believe you
When you say you don't need me anymore
So don't pretend to
Not love me at all

'Cause I don't believe you

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of P!nk's song "I don't believe you" tell a story about a relationship that's on the verge of breaking apart. The singer is doubtful of her lover's words and intentions, as she has been let down and disappointed in the past. The opening lines of the song offer a vivid metaphor, comparing the two partners to a swing set and a child that falls. It suggests that the singer is vulnerable and dependent on her lover, who has more power in the relationship.

The chorus of the song repeats the line "No, I don't believe you" three times, emphasizing the skepticism and frustration of the singer. She refutes her lover's statement that he doesn't need her anymore and is determined not to let go of their relationship. The lines "I won't remind you, you said we wouldn't be apart" show that the singer is holding her lover to his promises and hoping that he won't abandon her.

The final lines of the song express the singer's determination to hold on to her lover, even if it means being hurt again: "Just don't stand there and watch me fall, 'Cause I, 'cause I still don't mind at all." The repetition of the phrase "I don't mind at all" throughout the song implies that the singer is willing to endure the pain and uncertainty of her relationship.

Overall, "I don't believe you" is a powerful, emotional ballad that captures the fragility and complexity of human relationships.

I think this is her most underrated song. It's the most beautiful, heartfelt break-up song ever written in my opinion. Nothing encapsulates that feeling as good as this for me.

Yes yes...that's so true

I could not agree with any more... And the video only makes it even more sad :( And seeing that this don't even have 10 million views... saddens me even further...

I think the reason it's not as popular is that it hurts quite a lot. When I was 16 and my first partner broke up with me I was understandably upset, it was my first idea of what a relationship was and I felt rejected. I listened to this song then, it had just been released, and I couldn't stop crying. Now at almost 23 I look back over anyone whose ever made me feel rejected or sad and think of this song. It's like a quiet contemplation of how in denial people can be when someone breaks their heart. Luckily, since growing up I have discovered that it was mostly hormones and not real love exactly (as is often the case when we're kids), but the memory of those feelings remained and this song still comes to mind when I'm let down that way in my adult life. So maybe it's not popular because people don't want to confront that raw pain that comes at the moment of break up. The song doesn't come from or end on a position of strength but a deep vulnerability. Songs like TRY are hopeful, and SO WHAT is a ''SCREW THIS!" approach to the subject, but 'I don't believe you' is the moment when your at your weakest and can't let go. People fear to show that.

Jordan Thomas Which is exactly why I love this song, it's not afraid to show the most painful aspect of a break-up.

@Firespawnable

Jordan Thomas You just described this song perfectly! That was beautiful. :)

One of her best written songs lyrically; it's a shame it wasn't a bigger hit and didn't get the radio attention it deserved.
