Me and Bobby McGhee
P!nk Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Busted flat in Baton Rouge
Waitin' for the train
Feelin' nearly faded as my jeans
Bobby thumbed a diesel down
Just before it rained
Rode us all the way to New Orleans
I pulled my harpoon out of my dirty red bandanna
And was playing soft
While Bobby sang the blues
With them windshield wipers slappin' time
I was holdin' Bobby's hand in mine
We sang every song that driver knew
Freedom's just another word for nothin' left to lose
Nothin' ain't worth nothin' but it's free

Feelin' good was easy, Lord,
When he sang the blues
And feelin' good was good enough for me
Good enough for me and Bobby McGee

From Kentucky coal mines
To the California sun
Bobby shared the secrets of my soul
Through all kinds of weather, Lord
Through everything I done
Bobby baby kept me from the cold
Then somewhere near Salinas, Lord
I let him slip away
Lookin' for the home I hope he'll find it
And I'd trade all of my tomorrows
For one single yesterday
Holdin' Bobby's body next to mine
Freedom's just another word for nothin' left to lose
Nothin' left is all that Bobby left me

Feelin good was easy, Lord
When he sang the blues

And buddy, that was good enough for me
Good enough for me and Bobby McGee

Overall Meaning

The song "Me and Bobby McGhee" by P!nk is a cover of Janis Joplin's classic hit. The song tells the story of a hitchhiking couple, the singer and Bobby McGee, as they travel from Baton Rouge to New Orleans, and eventually to California. The opening lines of the song immediately set the scene of the singer's destitute state, "Busted flat in Baton Rouge, waitin' for a train, feelin' nearly faded as my jeans." This bleak picture is contrasted with the freedom they feel while traveling, "Freedom's just another word for nothin' left to lose." The song is both a tribute to and a lament for Bobby McGee, who is no longer with the singer.

The singer and Bobby share a deep connection, which is evident in the way she refers to him as "Bobby baby" and in the fact that she holds his hand while they sing. This connection is what keeps the singer going, both through the good times and the bad. However, near the end of the song, the singer realizes that Bobby is no longer with her, and she reflects on the loss she feels. The line "I'd trade all of my tomorrows for one single yesterday, holdin' Bobby's body next to mine" is particularly poignant.

Overall, "Me and Bobby McGhee" is a powerful song about love, freedom, and loss. It combines catchy melodies with heartfelt lyrics to create a timeless classic that resonates with listeners of all ages.

Man, this woman truly is something special. Can't nobody sing this like Janis but damn it we have this miracle of a human being we know as Pink and no one will ever be able to properly cover this song besides Pink. I speak for everyone when I say we love you. Every time I listen to her version of this song, it leaves me with chills and tears in my eyes. That's saying something.

I love Janis Joplin's version, it has that tortured haunting sound to it. And having said that, Pink's version is out of this world. Very few artists do the original classic justice, Pink definitely made this classic her own.

GrannyBee72

Pink is one of the most underrated singers out there. She rocks this one and damn near any other song she sings. I'm an old lady, but I love this girl's music. It comes from her heart....

Brian Dorn

One of the greatest songs ever written - and brilliantly performed.

WoW!! I never was a Pink fan but after hearing her sing this? She earned my respect.

stkc922

I love pink, both for her fast and slow songs. Her voice is so unique and she can have different styles with it

Donna Noble

THIS is why P!NK is amazing. That voice is so beautiful... ugh I can't even stand how perfect it is! Haha. I don't care what kind of music she sings, as long as she keeps on singing!

ken345a

That was freeking amazing. Probably the best performance of Bobby McGee I've ever heard.
