I played junior tennis and so did my daughter and I could have learned a lot from him on how to behave on the court and as a tennis parent. I remember when the Williams sisters came on to the professional scene and all my tennis friends were appalled at how they over celebrated when they would win. I thought they were such a breath of fresh air and that may have been because they didn't play a lot of junior tennis and weren't over stressed at a younger age. The media and the tennis world was so critical of Richard, but look what he did for his daughters, he made them champions before they even played one match. I am glad they are now giving him the respect he deserves.

***** Actually Venus has spoken about this interview s an adult and said she was HAPPY and not embarrassed that her dad defended and protected her. So dont compare her dad to yours! Re watch ONLY after the 3RD TIME she was asked the same question her dad at 1st calmly & respectfully tried to explain to the interviewer WHY he was stopping that line of questioning. But the interviewer rudely interrupted him & told the FATHER "Listen you cant keep on INTERRUPTING the interview"... Then that was when her dad rightfully stood up and got angry b/c this man was trying to CONTROL him and his MINOR daughter, basically saying stay out of me talking to your daughter. What nerve! He deserved exactly what he got

Dad knew what he was doing here. Happened to me at work. I was positive, confident, driven. People hate that, they see it as being "not humble" when really what it is is that the confident person has something they didn't, can thus advance more easily, and they don't like it and want to hold that confident person back. And in my case, not just colleagues, but the boss, they all envied that confidence and belief in myself, so they kept poking me, insulting me, slowly becoming more and more viscious, until I snapped at them, after two years of constant and increasingly bad nagging and bullying, and of course then it became about me snapping and how unprofessional I was and rude.

Crab mentality, dragging others down because they have something you don't - belief in themselves and a sense of purpose and potential. The most pathetic and worst generally accepted human trait probably.

Saddest thing for me - my dad for some reason always sides with people picking on me. If they try to plant a seed of doubt in me, he just reinforces it. In his mind, he is "being objective" when he does this. In reality he is an arrogant smug person who for some reason would feel like he lost something if he admitted I'm right and stood on my side.

I love my parents but i do wish i had more as a child, more discipline, i was a troubled teen, but a talented child, i was right into sports, every time i found something that i was really good at it, like athletics, surfing, i never got the push i needed to be the best that i wanted to be, this movie opened my eyes to the type of parent i want and will become for mine, absolutely amazing, god know what i was doing at 14!🙄🙄

I love it! That's it. Told the interviewer, "when your old azz and mine are in the grass" that Venus was going to be on the court playing tennis. Pop's was standing firm in that you will not plant seeds of self-doubt in my daughters. Not as hard as he fought and sacrificed to make them the legends and champions that they would turn out to be. Changed the face of the sport both literally and literally.

Yeah he's a great guy. He raised these 2 pretty well. He didnt do so hot with his first 4 tho...yikes. abandoned them age range of 8yr to 8 weeks old. Dude walked out on em and then met Venus and Serenas mom and acted like it never happened. I hope all fathers follow this man's guidance.

My parents went to bat like this for me a number of times too. When my white principal I couldn't get into any good private high schools and that I shouldn't bother, my parents pushed me and I got into 8. So many other times too. The power of black parenthood !

Richard is obviously experienced in this kind of situation. He knew what's going on. Venus was a black girl from ghetto at that time and Richard made sure that people knew that Venus would be the next big thing. Yes, they had a big mouth, they always talked a lot from the beginning. But Richard just didn't care because he apparently had a clear vision.

Since tennis was a largely a white sport, of course they perceived these black people as arrogant pricks. These media tried to portray them that way and also tried to force them to be humble a little bit. Richard basically telling them to fuck off. LOL Venus herself was smiling in delight at the commotion, I believe Richard often did such bold move to teach them about people and be strong.

Love this. Mr. Williams didn't give demon a chance to break and confuse Venus. The demon was setting the seeds of doubt in her. I see these interview techniques all the time.
