She Cried
P.J. Proby Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Little girl, terrified
She'd leave her room if only bruises would heal
A home is no place to hide
Her heart is breaking from the pain that she feels

Every day's the same, she fights to find her way
She hurts, she breaks, she hides and tries to pray
She wonders why
Does anyone ever hear her when she cries'

Today she's turning sixteen
Everyone singing but she can't seem to smile
They never get past arms length
How could they act like everything is alright'

Pulling down her long sleeves
To cover all the memories that scars leave
She says, 'Maybe making me bleed
Will be the answer that could wash the slate clean'

Every day's the same, she fights to find her way
She hurts, she breaks, she hides and tries to pray
She wonders why
Does anyone ever hear her when she cries'

This is the dark before the dawn
The storm before the peace
Don't be afraid 'cause seasons change
And God is watching over you, He hears you

And every day's the same, she fights to find her way
She hurts, she breaks, she hides and tries to pray
She'll be just fine
'Cause I know He hears her when she cries

Every day's the same, she fights to find her way
She hurts, she breaks, she hides and tries to pray
She'll be just fine
'Cause I know He hears her when she cries
She'll be just fine
'Cause I know He hears her when she cries

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to P.J. Proby's song She Cried narrate the story of a young girl who is suffering from abuse to the point where she feels the need to harm herself. Her bruises and scars are physical manifestations of her pain, and she hides them by wearing long sleeves. She is trapped in her own home, and no one seems to notice her cries for help. Despite her young age, she has already lost her innocence and is struggling to find a way out of her situation.

The song also touches on themes of faith and hope. The singer assures the girl that she is not alone and that God is watching over her. He believes that she will be okay, and that her cries will eventually be heard, leading her to a better future. Although the girl's present may be bleak, the singer reminds her that this is just the storm before the peace, and better days are ahead.

For me he is P.J.PERFECT! Greatest singer I have ever heard & seen!

Charismaticart

This reminds me of when I was a teenager in the sixties and I bought tickets for me and all my friends to see P.J. at the Birmingham Odean Theatre, because I was too afraid to go on my own. Imagine my disappointment when it was announced that P.J. was ill and that he would be replaced by the new singer Tom Jones who had just released 'It's Not Unusual'. I've held a grudge against Tom Jones ever since! We eventually go to see P.J. later at the Birmingham Town Hall. What memories of our youth!
