As a Chicano, I think this is nice! I see this more as appreciation than anything else. They have the Mexico flag, so they know, and are aware ,of where this all stemmed from and aren't trying to pass it off as their own like others so blatantly do. Besides, learning about other cultures is a good way to keep your mind open and helps you learn more things.

I was thinkin the same thing! Its cultural appreciation not appropriation. I mean you probably know this already but to those who don't a lot of ignorant people label all latin americans as 'Mexicans' (as if that's the only country south of the border.) and we all get labeled as "border hoping, job stealing, gang members, criminals" and overall just treated as if were uneducated, speaking from personal experience as a chicana and the way I've seen my family members and friends get treat by non hispanics yelling "go back to your country" and all the other horrible things they do and say about us. My point is It's beautiful thing to see how those in the video celebrated and see the beauty of chicano culture while oftern times here in the U.S it's frowned upon.

As a Mexican, who grew up always ashamed of my background and culture, this makes me so happy to the point I almost cried. To hear someone say they feel saved by something I tried so hard to cover up.. I feel strangely comforted. I don't find this offensive at all. This is beautiful.

It is funny. Car culture is a great example. Import car guys in the US are always hunting rare JDM (japanese domestic market) parts both OEM & aftermarket that weren't available for sale here. The opposite has become true in Japan, they started importing USDM parts to emulate the style of the American released models! Also a side note but did you know Lexus, Infiniti, and Acura do not exist in Japan. They are Toyota, Nissan, and Honda respectively. They only exist because in the 90s Japanese manufacturers didn't believe they could sell luxury cars under their own marquees here in north America. I've had a few people get outstandingly offended when I told them they're Lexus or Infiniti was actually a rebadged Toyota or Nissan! 🤣

As someone who grew up in LA, I would love to go to Japan and see this. I love the idea of sharing cultures and it would be interesting to see what kind of flavor they might have added to it. I don't see it as appropriation. The saying "Mimicry is the sincerest form of flattery" comes to mind when I see it. They clearly admire Chicano culture and try their best to emulate it.

It’s a beautiful thing to see, in the times where people are quick to rush into thinking something is offensive because one does not come from said culture, seeing something like this is amazing. The Japanese have always taken immersing themselves in western culture to an extreme. There are communities in Japan that dress in 1940s workwear, military, western, along with 80s and 90s skate culture and most importantly hip hop. They have a deep appreciation and show deep respect to the cultures they love.

I find it pretty amazing that these people embrace our culture. Growing up as a Chicana, I had not much outside influence. I was always fascinated with every other culture except for my own. When I grew up, I tried everything to get away from it because I only seen & experienced the negativity around it. Watching this video is making me feel some kind of way. It makes me very proud of my Mexican/American heritage and all of it’s beauty. And FYI to the journalist… Chicano’s and our culture is all over the U.S.A not just in L.A.

almost 20 years ago I read an article like this about how hip hop culture was being adopted in Japan. They talked about how hungry young Japanese were to break out of the traditional culture to explore new ideas and new ways to express themselves. Kind of cool to see the influence of another subculture having a similar impact.

As someone who is Japanese, I find this embarrassing to see every time I go outside. People in Japan who dress like this, and also other subculture, just do so for the look and status. As a hispanic that married an Asian it makes me feel proud of my choice. He is Vietnamese-American and I am Colombian- American. It feels like people from other cultures judge us as well as our own but we still love each other. It does not feel like we are so different. Seeing this makes feel like I am not so weird for marrying outside my culture. We are all still human beings who fall in love with each other even if we come from opposite sides of the world. There is more commonalities that you may think

As a Mexican woman whose dad looks Asian and strongly believes there’s strong ties to Japanese’s settlers in areas of our coastal Mexican state of Guerrero and possibly Japanese bloodline somewhere up my family tree. I’m so happy to see this. I’ve always said if I wasn’t born Mexican I would want to be Brazilian or Japanese. And I really want to visit Japan one day 🤞🏼One day I will take an ancestry test to see if I have any Japanese in me like I suspect.. since my dad and a lot of people from around the same area as him have squinty eyes and dominant features of Asian while being and even feeling completely Mexican.

I was just having this conversation with my 50 year old Mexican dad. He had never heard of cultural appropriation. I explained what it was and gave various examples. He genuinely felt it was just people being interested in a culture and showcasing the tradition. It’s crazy how we say that older generations are more conservative and close minded but in reality it’s us young ones who are easily closed and offended. The older folks are also the ones who actually suffered the discrimination that would lead to the word cultural appropriation so only they have the right.

I was blessed to go to Japan while in the NAVY. I will not forget the love and respect I got from the Japanese people. Not once did i feel racism or discrimination. The total opposite.

TBH I think Japan is a great example of cultural appreciation, they have American, British, and other European, and clearly Mexican cultural points, I have always found it fascinating and so cool that they do things in their own unique way. I find it heartwarming and embracing. Plus, could Japan BE ANY COOLER

As an Irish American , totally white guy who happens to live in a town that is 40% Hispanic…. I love this too. I’ve spent time in L.A. and Mexico( not the touristy b.s. the real deal) and I not only think Chicano culture is really beautiful , but the people themselves are beautiful. The Japanese are amazing people as well for a million reasons . The comment above was perfect that said it’s not appropriation, it’s appreciation. We’re all one race in actuality , ( if you believe the Bible)so if we’re loving and appreciating each other in ANY way, I love it.

I remember growing up in the 80's and 90's I use to collect Lowrider Magazines, and they always covered Japan's Lowriders and had Lowrider Shows in Japan. Amazing and weird at the same time

As long as you're not preventing me from practicing "my" culture, I couldn't care less what you do. That's what tolerance is. It's not any of my business how you personally choose to dress, grow your hair, make music, what food/drinks you enjoy, etc. No one wants to be locked into a preordained genealogy or set cultural pattern for living their life. Choose for yourself what you like, and allow others to exercise that same freedom to choose.

tbh I know Japan has always had a thing for our culture. My grandpa used to tell me that he knew a bunch of trios romanticos and ranchera singers from Mexico that would tour all across Latin America and also do tours in Japan. Same with lucha Libre and boxing. He knew a lot of luchadores and boxers with massive followings in Japan. I was surprised when he told me that. I was like "wtf el Santo and Vicente Fernandez were big in Japan?"

Lived in Japan for a few years. One of my favorite flashbacks was being in Yokohama and seeing at least 10 Escalades back to back suited out with rims just crusing down the road. I was in a funk but it instanly brought me out of it. Watching the Lowriders perodically go through Tokyo was always an amazing show.

Japanese do pretty well appreciating other cultures, namely Latino culture.
In the 1990's, they had a Salsa music band named "Orquesta De La Luz" who were pretty successful at that time. Not just that, they actually put out some Very good songs.
This Chicano/Cholo-Chola culture in Japan for me is showing appreciation and respect.

Prepare to eat alot. Japanese people are very very very , "eat this, try this, take this, no i dont expect something in return i gave you this becuz i gave it to you, eat some more...."
But the best way to show them true respect learn the language. Even if you dont sound right they giggle, buts its all good frienship, not clowning, and they do understand. Language first, food, learn the food second. All else flows by itself afterwards.
Stuff i learned in okinawa, tokyo, gotemba, go-desoto, Naha back in 99-2000.

Mexican (chicano culture) is very family oriented and they form lifetime friends that they treat like family. The culture is very warm an inviting as the saying -mi case is su casa, translation my home is your home, just very inviting. Finding value and appreciation for the Chicano culture by any culture is positive thing. I also want to mention Japan has beautiful culture that has so much respectfulness, and honor in their culture which is also appreciated. We all can learn from the many beautiful cultures of our world, in this very human earth experience.
